AC Milan face Genoa on Wednesday as the two teams finally meet in their match rescheduled from Week 1, after the clash was originally postponed after August’s Genova tragedy.
Milan on the weekend got back to the winners list after a horror seven days which saw them lose the Derby della Madonnina to a last-gasp Mauro Icardi strike and a Europa League loss to Real Betis at home. However, a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Sampdoria on the weekend was enough to send them straight back into contention for a Champions League spot come the end of the season.
They have the league’s third most potent attack with 18 goals already this season and a win against Genoa will send them into the top four.
Genoa, however, have started the new season rather inconsistently. They have conceded the third most goals in the league so far and have shown that they are leaky at times – conceded three, four and five goals in games against Parma, Lazio and Sassuolo respectively.
A win is just as vital for the Rossoblu; three points would put themselves into contention for a coveted Europa League spot and would see them leapfrog cross-town rivals Sampdoria.
Milan are expected to be without Ivan Strinic, Mattia Caldara and Davide Calabria for the match, as the trio battle injuries.
Genoa are missing Federico Marchetti for the match along with former Milan striker Gianluca Lapadula.
Potential Milan Starting XI: Donnarumma, Abate, Musacchio, Romagnoli, Rodriguez, Suso, Kessie, Biglia, Bonaventura, Higuain, Cutrone
Potential Genoa Starting XI: Radu, Biraschi, Romero, Criscito, Pereira, Romulo, Sandro, Bessa, Lazovic, Piatek, Kouame
Key Stats & Facts
- AC Milan have only lost once in their last 27 home Serie A games against Genoa.
- Genoa only have one point against Milan in their last three meetings.
- AC Milan – 10/21
- Draw – 19/5
- Genoa – 33/5
Although Milan’s stat of not keeping a clean sheet for their last 15 Serie A matches is alarming, I believe they will do enough to see off the threat of Genoa. Gonzalo Higuain is really starting to find his feet in his new colours and is sure to be firing come Wednesday night.
I think it will be another high-scoring affair for Milan. Every home game this season so far there have been over 2.5 goals and I can’t see that changing here.
