Portsmouth top the table in League 1 so far with a W8, D3, L1 record so far. It's been an excellent opening to the season by Kenny Jackett's men and they have a very well balanced team which I think has been key to their success.

Bringing in central midfield duo Tom Naylor and Ben Thompson in was a canny move from Jackett and they've provided a solid base to allow the front 4 more freedom which has especially benefited Jamal Lowe and Ronan Curtis. Centre half Matt Clarke is probably the best in the division in his position and they have the goals of Brett Pitman at the other end of the pitch. It's no surprise to see Pompey up there but the way they've gone about their business, especially on the road, has been majorly impressive.

AFC Wimbledon on the other hand are at the other end of the table with a W3, D2, L7 record. The Wombles have recently lost to strugglers Plymouth and Bradford, failing to score in both of those encounters. Disappointing. It's at their Kingsmeadow home where they struggle most, they've only won once and that was against rock bottom Oxford. A 0-0 against Coventry was their only point other than that, they've lost their other 4 and also lost both home cup ties this term.

I fail to see the quality in their backline to be able to keep out this Portsmouth side. Player for player the visitors are far superior in my eyes and if they play to their potential it should be 3 points for Pompey.

Team News

Wimbledon may welcome Terrell Thomas and James Hanson back into the squad after injury.

Portsmouth are without loan duo David Wheeler and Andre Green. The impressive Ronan Curtis is also unavailable as he's with the Ireland U21 squad.

Potential Wimbledon Starting XI: McDonnell, Watson, Oshilaja, Nightingale, Purrington, Trotter, Soares, Wagstaff, Barcham, Appiah, Piggott.

Potential Portsmouth Starting XI: MacGillivray, Thompson, Whatmough, Clarke, Brown, Thompson, Naylor, Close, Evans, Lowe, Pitman.

Key Stats & Facts

  • Wimbledon have lost 6 of their last 7 home games in all competitions.
  • Portsmouth have only dropped 2 points away from home all season.
  • Portsmouth already have 14 more points than Wimbledon this season.

Betting Odds

  • AFC Wimbledon – 11/5
  • Draw – 9/4
  • Portsmouth – 11/8

The Verdict

Given the respective home/away form in this, many would expect Portsmouth to be much closer to odds-on. I feel the bookies have slightly overreacted to the home defeat for Portsmouth last time out, away from home they can play with less pressure and they tend to have a higher level of discipline on the road.

11/5 on the home side makes little appeal, I can see Pompey coming here to get the job done and quotes of 11/8 are desirable.
