Anthony Joshua looks to take another step in unifying the Heavyweight division this Saturday when he takes on New Zealander Joseph Parker for the IBF, WBO, & WBA titles. A win for either man would see them leave Cardiff with 3 belts, leaving only the WBC title needed to complete the collection.
Joshua will be the first to say his last outing against Takam wasn’t his best, but with the opponent change on short notice it would be harsh to hold that against him, especially when he still won comfortably. And it set up a fight that is vitally important when bringing the division together, as Joseph Parker would enter the fray as the WBO heavyweight Champion.
UK fans should be familiar with Parker, as his last fight was on British soil when he came and defended his title against Hughie Fury (cousin of Tyson,) in what was a completely lack lustre affair. Some scored the bout for Fury, others a draw, but ultimately Parker took a close decision which was probably the right result. What that bout will do however is have fans wondering what Parker has to offer against AJ, especially considering the size discrepancy between the two.
As mentioned, Joshua didn’t have the best of showings previously, however his career to date stacks up as anyone’s in the HW division, and I’m hard pressed to think of a way Parker can win this fight. He could come in very light and look to use speed to his advantage, dragging the fight out to the latter rounds, however it’s extremely unlikely that he will get a decision over in the U.K. Joshua will look to command the ring from the onset, establishing his jab in the centre in order to set up his power shots. Parker is quite durable so it will be interesting too see how long his chin can hold up under the power of Joshua.
Elsewhere on the card David Price takes on Alexander Povetkin. It would be great if Price could overcome the odds and beat the prolific steroid cheat, however the odds are stacked against him.
Anthony Joshua 1/6 Joseph Parker 9/2
