Arsenal v Koln Betting Preview
Venue: Emirates Stadium
Channel: BT Sport
Arsenal kick start their Europa League campaign with a home tie against FC Koln who sit rock bottom of the Bundesliga having only scored one goal in the meantime. The bookmakers have this as a straightforward victory for the Gunners and it would be hard to disagree, despite WEnger hinting at making changes to his starting eleven. There is a lot of pressure on the Gunners to succeed in this competition having missed out of a Champions League space for the first time in Arsene Wenger’s reign. Playing on Thursday nights and making travels to various new grounds will be a whole new experience for the fans, but with a top four place looking a tough task, this is a competition the North London club should be looking to win (8/1) to regain Champions League football to the Emirates.
The side from Western Germany travel to London in horrific form: 3 losses from 3 and only one goal scored. FC Koln finished fifth in last season’s Bundesliga whihc saw them qualify for this competition and this season’s start is somewhat in stark contrast to last season’s form which saw them finish strong. In 1985/86, they were runners up in this competition but that looks unlikely this season given the high calibre of teams in this years draw, with AC Milan’s current favourites at 7/1 – ahead of Arsenal at 8/1.
Arsenal are expected to rest players, with the trip to Stamford Bridge on Sunday in mind. Coquelin is missing though with a hamstring injury.
For Koln, Sorensen was brought off at half time last week and may not feature on Thursday.
Possible Arsenal Starting XI: Ospina; Bellerin, Mustafi, Mertesacker, Monreal, Kolasinac; Xhaka, Elneny; Iwobi, Walcott, Giroud
