Two of the Premier League’s ‘top six’ clash in the Carabao Cup final this Sunday, as Arsenal take on Manchester City at Wembley.

Manchester City’s hopes of bagging a remarkable four trophy sweep this season were blown away last time out in a 1-0 defeat away to Wigan. City enjoyed the lion share of possession, but struggled to create many clear cut opportunities and played the second half with ten men, following Fabian Delph’s controversial first half dismissal. Will Grigg’s late strike condemned Guardiola’s side to a 1-0 defeat and last 16 exit from the FA Cup.

City will be eager to respond with a victory to secure their first trophy of the season on Sunday at Wembley. Their encounter with Arsenal earlier this season resulted in a 3-1 win at the Etihad, with many feeling City didn’t reach the high performance levels they have been capable of this campaign. Their were plenty of occasions in that game in which City exploited the spaces in Arsenals midfield, left unoccupied time and time again as the Gunners tried to implement their attacking style of play. I’d be surprised if Wenger doesn’t take a more cautious approach on Sunday, maybe through assembling a slightly more defensive formation or starting line up.

He watched his Arsenal side progress to last 16 of the Europa League on Thursday, despite losing 2-1 to tiny Swedish outfit Oosterunds on the night. Their 3-0 away win in the first leg was enough to see them through to the next stage of the competition, potentially paving the way for alternative route into next years Champions League.

Result aside, Wenger will be pleased that he managed to rest some key players ahead of this weekend’s cup final against City. Pierre Emerick Aubameyang was cup tied in the Europa league, he’s set to return and will be looking to kick start his Arsenal career following his January move from Dortmund. The Gabon international may have opened his account for his new club, though is yet to set the world alight and what better stage to do it on than his first cup final at Wembley. Henrik Mkhitaryan won’t be supplying the ammunition for Aubameyang though, he’s cup tied after featuring in the competition for Manchester United earlier in the season. The return of Aaron Ramsey and Mesut Ozil should soften that blow however as both sides exhibit an array of talent in the final third of the pitch.

As always when these two Premier League heavyweights clash, we’re expecting goals. City may be favourites, but will last season’s FA Cup semi final victory give Arsenal the big game edge going into this eagerly anticipated league cup final? Enjoy the game.
