Arsenal and Sporting Lisbon meet again in the Europa League this Thursday and unfortunately for the Portuguese side, they are probably playing Arsenal at the worst possible time.
The Gunners haven’t lost since mid-August where they were defeated by Maurizio Sarri’s Chelsea. Furthermore, Arsenal provided a spirited performance last time out against Liverpool where Alexandre Lacazatte managed to rescue a point for the North London side.
Regarding performances in the Europa League, Arsenal and Sporting Lisbon occupy first and second in Group E with the London side currently undefeated in the tournament. In addition to this, the two clubs have already met this season in a game which ended in a 1-0 victory for the Gunners.
Sporting Lisbon currently sit third within their domestic league but have seemed to struggle for form as of late. They won their last game against Santa Clara but have recently recorded defeats to Estoril and, of course, Arsenal in the reverse fixture.
Following his antics in-front of goal within the reverse fixture, Danny Welbeck is likely to feature and Unai Emery could be set to make a range of changes. In addition to this, Koscielny and Elneny will not feature for Arsenal due to injury. On the other hand, Sporting Lisbon have a few injuries which include Raphinha, Ristovski, Battaglia and Sturaro.
Potential Arsenal Starting XI: Leno; Lichtsteiner, Sokratis, Holding, Xhaka; Ramsey, Guendouzi, Torreira; Mkhitaryan, Welbeck, Iwobi
Potential Sporting Lisbon Starting XI: Ribeiro; Gaspar, Coates, Pinto, Acuna; Salin, Petrovic, Gudelj; Nani, Montero, Fernandes
Head To Head
- As previously mentioned, Arsenal have already defeated Sporting Lisbon 1-0 this season – thanks to a brace from Danny Welbeck. However, prior to this fixture, the two teams hadn’t played each other since 1969, where the Gunners won 3-0.
Key Stats & Facts
- Arsenal have gone 14 games without losing.
- Arsenal are yet to lose at the Emirates this season.
- Arsenal – 1/3
- Draw – 24/5
- Sporting – 11/1
Without a doubt, Arsenal are going to win this fixture and I think that they’re going to keep a clean sheet as well. Sporting won’t be able to provide any real threat to the Arsenal back-line.
