The Dean Smith revival has failed to spark for Aston Villa thus far, they’ve got a good chance of adding three points to their tally here though.
Villa aren’t the best travellers but are fairly reliable on their own patch. They sneaked a win in Smith’s first game at home to Swansea and I could see a similar type of game here. They have the far superior squad and are coming up against a charitable Bolton Wanderers side.
Phil Parkinson has had his hands tied to some extent this season, the only major signing was Christian Doidge who was charged with stepping up from the 4th tier of English football. It’s unhealthy scenario behind the scenes at the Macron too, relationships between management and the board are strained and it would be another minor miracle if Parky can lead them to safety.
This term the Lancashire outfit are posting an xG for figure of just 0.7 which mirrors their actual output. They lack creativity and bite going forward and are likely to be defending for large swathes of this game. Bolton lost against relegation rivals Hull last time out, an indictment of how bad they’re at the minute.
Birkir Bjarnason is our for Villa, as is striker Keenan Davis.
Bolton are only without Sammy Ameobi.
Potential Aston Villa Starting XI: Nyland, Hutton, Chester, Tuanzebe, Taylor, Hourinhane, McGinn, Grealish, Bolasie, Kodjia, Abraham.
Potential Bolton Starting XI: Alnwick, Olkowski, Wheater, Hobbs, Beavers, Taylor, Williams, Lowe, Oztumer, Doidge, Magennis.
Key Stats & Facts
- Bolton have failed to score in 6 of their last 8 matches.
- Bolton have failed to win in 11 of their last 12.
- Under 3.5 goals has landed in all but 2 of Bolton’s fixtures so far.
- Aston Villa – 4/9
- Draw – 15/4
- Bolton – 7/1
Aston Villa are short enough here but should have too much for a shot-shy Bolton side. I’m going to boost that 4/9 on the hosts to a more palatable 6/5 shot by chucking in under 3.5 goals.
We know Parkinson’s MO on the road and that’s to be as organised as possible and concentrate on defence first. However, the gulf in quality between the respective squads should prove too much. Villa have the likes of Jack Grealish, Jonathon Kodjia and Tammy Abraham to try unlock that defence.
