Atletico are having a very average season by their standards. They sit 7 points behind top but not only that they are now behind bitter rivals Real Madrid, who they were well clear of on the turn into 2019. They also suffered heartbreak when drawing 4-4 on aggregate with Girona in the Copa Del Ray, which saw them knocked out due to the away goals rule. They managed to scrape a 1-0 victory at Vallecano on the weekend to end their so called “losing streak”.
Juventus on the other hand have all but tied up their domestic League title. They sit 11 points clear with 15 games to go and seen as they have only dropped 6 points so far it is hard to understand how they could fail to see it out. Juventus also disappointingly got knocked out of their domestic cup with a 3-0 defeat to Atlanta. Last time out Juventus cruised past a poor Frosinone side with a 3-0 victory.
Both sides are now a formality for these stages of the tournament. Atletico and Juventus have both reached the final on two occasions across the last 5 seasons, and both suffering a 4-1 defeat on one of the occasions to Ronaldo’s Real Madrid. However, it seems with the transfer of CR7 that trend is about to change, and Real Madrid are not considered close to favourites for the first time in a number of years. Many Juventus fans feel Ronaldo was the final piece of the puzzle for Juventus to get past that final hurdle in Europe.
Target man Diego Costa is finally back after a long spell on the sidelines, he made a brief substitute appearance at the weekend but would be unlikely to start so soon on his return. Koke and Lucas Hernandez will both still be unlikely to feature.
Cuadrado is out for Juve with injury and Douglas Costa is a doubt to return for the game.
Potential Atletico Starting XI: Oblak, Arias, Godin, Gimenez, Filipe Luis, Correa, Thomas, Saul, Lemar, Morata, Griezmann
Potential Juventus Starting XI: Szczesny, Alex Sandro, Cheillini, Bonucci, Cancelo, Matuidi, Pjanic, Bentancur, Dybala, Ronaldo, Mandzukic
Head To Head
- The sides don’t meet often given their nationalities, the last time they met was the 13/14 Group stages in which Atletico got the better claiming 4 points to Juventus 1.
- Previous to this the two haven’t met since the 60’s where Juventus won 4 of the games and Atletico won 1.
Key Stats & Facts
- Atletico lost back to back games last week for the first time since November 2016, which also featured a game against rivals Real Madrid.
- Juventus have been unstoppable in the League this season, still boasting an unbeaten record, however they have encountered a slightly rockier ride outside of the domestic campaign, against the likes of Atlanta and Young Boys.
- Atletico 9/5
- Draw 21/10
- Juventus 13/8
Atletico have come into this game at one of the worst periods possible, after suffering back to back defeats before their 1-0 victory at the weekend.
Juventus have been a real force this season especially helped by the addition of non-other than Ronaldo. Cristiano has 18 goals and 7 assists in 23 games, working out at over a goal contribution per match. He has 5 goals in his last 5 games and is great value to keep that form going at 19/10.
The last 2 times the sides met in 13/14 group stages, ended in a 0-0 draw and 1-0 victory for Atletico, showing how strong both sides are at the back. Atletico are renowned for their impressive defence, so it will be hard for Juve to break down. Juve would also come away from the game at 0-0 feeling confident they could do the Business back in Turin.
Admittedly both these tips oppose one another, however I believe the only breakthrough this game could see would be a moment of magic from none other than CR7.
