Matchday 5 of the Champions League group stages sees Atletico Madrid and Monaco lock horns with both sides looking to claim three points for completely different reasons.

Atletico Madrid enter the game unbeaten in 7 and having lost just 1 of their last 15 games in all competitions – a 4-0 away defeat to Borussia Dortmund back in October. Incidentally, Los Colchoneros did bounce back from that humiliating defeat, beating BVB 2-0 at the Wanda Metropolitano earlier this month.

Under Diego Simeone, Atletico Madrid have W22-D2-L2 at home in the Champions League (90 minutes), compared to W11-D9-L8 away.

A win on Wednesday will keep their hopes of securing top spot in Group A alive.

Meanwhile, Thierry Henry claimed his first win as Monaco boss after 7 attempts on Saturday with a 1-0 away victory over Caen thanks to a goal from Radamel Falcao – his first in two months.

Despite a torrid start, owner Dimitri Rybolovlev has given the Frenchman his “total support”.

The Red and Whites have claimed just 1 point from a possible 12 in Europe this season which was a 1-1 draw away to Club Brugge. However, that was followed up with a 4-0 home defeat to the Belgian side last time out.

However unlikely, Henry will be hoping for a much more positive result on Wednesday where a win would give his side an outside chance of a place in the Europa League knockout stages.

Team News

Diego Godin is out for the home side. Diego Costa, Juanfran and Jose Gimenez will face late fitness tests.

Monaco will be without Kamil Glik, Jean Eudes Aholou and Jordi Mboula. Andrea Raggi, Pietro Pellegri, Almamy Toure and Adama Traore will be assessed on the day.

Potential Atletico Madrid Starting XI: Oblak, Luís, Hernández, Savic, Arias, Ñíguez, Koke, Rodrigo, Correa, Griezmann, Costa

Potential Monaco Starting XI: Benaglio, Henrichs, Mukinayi, Jemerson, Gabriel, Bennasser, Tielemans, Chadli, Diop, Golovin, Falcao

Head To Head

  • Atletico Madrid have won the only previous meeting between the two sides, a 1-2 victory in the reverse fixture back in October.

Key Stats & Facts

  • Monaco have failed to win any of their last 12 matches in the Champions League.
  • Monaco have conceded at least 2 goals in 5 of their last 6 matches in the Champions League.

Betting Odds

  • Atletico Madrid 11/57
  • Draw 7/1
  • Monaco 22/1

The Verdict

I expect a professional performance from Atletico Madrid on Wednesday, who will be looking to avoid any kind of upset.

At the time of writing, a home outright win is as low as 1/6.

Interestingly, 10 of Atletico’s last 11 wins in the Champions League on home turf have featured under 3.5 goals, so the 10/11 on offer for ‘Atletico Win & Under 3.5 Goals’ looks good value.

I also like the look of a second angle from the cards market, although it must be said it goes slightly against the stats.

Between the two sides, there has been an average of exactly 4 cards per game in the Champions League this season. However, I don’t see this being a feisty affair and with that in mind I’m happy backing Under 3.5 Cards at 13/8.
