This promises to be a fascinating semi final as La Liga champions Barcelona face off against an in-form Liverpool side. The Spanish giants are slight favourites to progress to the final, but they’d be right to be fearful of the very serious threat that the Merseyside club can pose.

You could argue the way this is set up actually favours Liverpool as they have the second leg at Anfield. With Barca’s less than convincing record at this stage in the competition on the road then the reds will be delighted to bring back at least a draw from this first leg.

Having said that, it is easier said than done to beat Barcelona on their own patch. They’ve lost just the once at the Camp Nou this season, and their historic record in this competition at home demands respect. The last time they lost at home in the champions league was 6 years ago against Bayern Munich. 6 years! Since then they’ve won 29 and drawn 3. Therefore the near even-money quotes do look attractive on the hosts here, irrespective of who they’re up against.

Liverpool have that magic front three though and they’re all hitting form at the right time. Barca will have to set up to halt any possible counter attacks because if the likes of Salah and Mane can get behind the centre halves they have the speed to cause damage.

Sergio Busquets therefore will have a big job at stopping the Liverpool attackers getting into the final third. He is and has been an excellent servant to the Catalans but he is getting on a bit now so it will be interesting to see if Ernesto Valverde gives him a bit more protection in defensive midfield.

Team News

Rafinha is the only doubt for Barcelona. Nelson Semedo could start at right back for his added pace.

Adam Lallana is a doubt for Liverpool, Fabinho and Roberto Firmino aren’t 100% but are likely to play.

Potential Barcelona Starting XI: Ter Stegen, Semedo, Pique, Lenglet, Alba, Busquets, Arthur, Rakitic, Coutinho, Suarez, Messi.

Potential Liverpool Starting XI: Allison, Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho, Wijnaldum, Henderson, Mane, Salah, Firmino.

Key Stats & Facts

  • Barcelona are undefeated in their last 10 champions league games.
  • Liverpool have won their last 3 champions league games, scoring at least twice in each of them.
  • Barcelona have been winning at half time and full time in their last three champions league games.

Betting Odds

  • Barcelona – 10/11
  • Draw – 14/5
  • Liverpool – 16/5

The Verdict

Liverpool have proven to be very hard to beat this season but they have lost three games on the road in this competition this season. PSG, Napoli and Red Star Belgrade all disposed of them and it’s true that the Reds are much more comfortable on their own soil.

It’s hard to see the visitors not scoring though, if they get space on the break then they have the clinical nature to take the opportunities that present themselves. Therefore I’ll take the 5/2 on a home win with both teams to score.

I’ll also have a tickle on the aforementioned Sergio Busquets to be carded at 11/4. He could easily be left with a situation where he would have to cynically foul a Liverpool player when they go on the break. His position sees the most yellow cards compared to other position too. What’s more, he was booked against Manchester United in the last round, he’s also picked up more yellow cards (10) than any other Barcelona player.

One final bet that takes my fancy is Lionel Messi to have 3+ shots on target which is available at 8/5 with Coral. He’s averaging 2.8 shots on target in this competition this season, his goal scoring statistics don’t even need mentioning, they’re outrageous. He’s also on penalties and free kicks, free kicks are almost like penalties to him too, pretty much all of them land on target. This same bet is even money elsewhere.
