Sunday’s Supercopa de España will be played outside Spain for the first time since its inception in 1982.
Traditionally, the La Liga and Copa del Rey champions face off in a two-legged tie, however this year’s Super Cup will be contested under a single-match format.
Ernesto Valverde won the domestic double in his first term as Barcelona boss, so Copa del Rey runners-up, Sevilla, will provide the competition.
Valverde’s side thumped the Andalusians 5-0 in last season’s cup final, continuing a recent trend of high scoring affairs between the sides. An average of 3.5 goals has been produced over their last six meetings, each of these fixtures seeing three or more conversions.
Historical data tends to align with this trend and suggests the goals could flow in Morroco. Barça have been involved in eight of the previous nine Supercopa de España’s and have seen Over 2.5 Goals land on 11 out of 16 occasions.
Unsurprisingly, this punt is best priced at an unappealing 8/15, however we can back a Barcelona victory and over two goals to be scored at 21/20 with Ladbrokes. With Sevilla still adapting to life under Pablo Machín, particularly with regard to the tactician’s 3-5-2 formation, this odds-against price makes for an appealing play.
Young Brazilians Arthur and Malcom could make their competitive debuts for Barcelona, after arriving from Grêmio and Bordeaux respectively. Jasper Cillessen is set to start in goal for the Blaugrana.
Following his side’s 1-0 victory against Lithuania’s Zalgiris on Thursday, Pablo Machín may opt freshen up his starting XI.
Potential Barcelona Starting XI: Cillessen, Alba, Lenglet, Piqué, Semedo, Busquets, Arthur, Coutinho, Malcom, Messi, Suárez.
Potential Sevilla Starting XI: Vaclík, Mercado, Carriço, Gnagnon, Escudero, Vidal, Mesa, Banega, Nolito, Sarabia, Ben Yedder.
Head To Head
- Sevilla have failed to beat Barcelona in their last nine attempts.
Key Stats & Facts
- Barcelona won two of the three meetings between the sides last season.
- Barcelona – 4/7
- Draw – 37/10
- Sevilla – 11/2
Having played 90 minutes of Europa League football in midweek, Sevilla may lack the energy to compete with their opponents. The data points to an exciting spectacle, so back Barcelona to triumph in a game involving three or more goals.
