Bayern Munich v Besiktas Betting Preview
Many are fancying Bayern Munich to go all the way in the Champions League, a Goliath of the European scene, under their old boss Jupp Heynckes they are back to their swashbuckling best. The draw was very favourable to them as well considering they finished 2nd in the group stages as they take on Turkish champions Besiktas.
Bayern will have full focus on this competition considering how far ahead they are in the Bundesliga, just the 19 point gap between them and 2nd. One worry would be that they aren’t playing top class European opposition domestically and they will have to pick up their game even more but I believe they can do that. Looking through their form it is a sea of green, this team is used to winning and it would be a major shock if they didn’t have a lead to hold onto in the second leg.
One factor that the Bayern recruitment team highlighted this season was finding a solid back-up option for Robert Lewandowski in order to keep the Pole fit and fresh for these big European ties. They did just that bringing in ex Hannover and Hoffenheim striker Sandro Wagner in, a player in a similar mould to Lewandowski, the German international has done a good job settling in quickly on his return to Bavaria.
Visitors Besiktas were impressive in the group stages and looked a threat going forward with the likes of Talisca and Cenk Tosun standing out. Of course, the latter moved to Merseyside to join Everton last month and they haven’t replaced him well in my opinion bringing in journeyman Vagner Love who hasn’t done much on the European scene since his CSKA Moscow days and oddly, Cyle Larin from Orlando in the MLS. So far Senol Günes’ summer recruitment drive has proved a great success, bringing in players with a great deal of Champions League experience in the form of Pepé and Alvaro Negredo has worked for the Black Eagles. However going to Munich is going to be much harder than their group stage travels to Porto, Monaco and Leipzig.
Im expecting Bayern to come out all guns blazing, they tend to in this competition and they’ll want this tie pretty much wrapped up on home soil. Going to Istanbul without a comfortable advantage can be an unwanted predicament with the hostility of the atmosphere at the Vodafone Arena.
Bayern haven’t being blowing teams away recently but they haven’t had to. At 1/6 it’s how to find an angle to get the hosts onside in this one. You have to stretch to a -2.5 line on the asian handicap in order to get an odds against price but if Besiktas do what they’ve done in every game in the group stages and score, then Bayern would have to score at least 4 for that to land which is a bit of a stretch.
Alternatively, I’ve found an interesting angle in SkyBet’s request a bet market. Bayern to score 2+ goals, Bayern to have 5+ corners and Besiktas to pick up 20+ booking points is available at 10/11 and you’d have to fancy all of those factors to land in this first leg. Bayern will push this Besiktas back and put pressure on them and that should be conducive to corners and goals for the hosts. Besiktas have the likes of Gary Medel, Atiba Hutchinson and Pepe who all like a card.
Bayern have an almost fully fit squad to chose from and Thomas Müller came out and said that his coach is spoilt for choice. James Rodriguez has been excellent especially since the return from the Hinrunde and he should start here behind Lewandowski. Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery look likely to take the flanks with Corentin Tollisso and Arturo Vidal likely to hold midfield.
Besiktas will go into their first game without Cenk Tosun after his January Transfer. Key men Talisca and Pepe are fit though.
Potential Bayern Munich Starting XI: Neuer, Kimmich, Boateng, Hummels, Alaba, Vidal, Tollisso, Ribery, James, Robben, Lewandowski.
Potential Besiktas Starting XI: Ramirez, Gonül, Pepe, Medel, Erkin, Hutchinson, Arslan, Babel, Talisca, Quaresma, Negredo.
