The time has finally come for Belgium. After years of development and the increase of weight & expectation on the Red Devils’ shoulders, this World Cup is the one they’ve been waiting for. Their previous World Cup was underwhelming and disappointing to say the least, as they barely managed to score more than a goal to then to get knocked out by eventual runner-ups Argentina. Despite sugar-coating the players for the last 5 years, it finally seems like they could live up to the hype.
Panama’s situation is the complete opposite. Their dramatic 2-1 win over Costa Rica in the last game of CONCACAF qualifying saw them finally make to a World Cup after USA unexpectedly choked in the final game. Such joy was brought to the nation that Panama’s president declared a public holiday, with goalscorer Roman Torres being hailed as the man to get them to Russia- despite the major controversy surrounding the winning goal.
The Red Devils should win with ease, although La Marea Roja will be sure to put up an extremely good fight, but having one of the oldest squads at the World Cup won’t favour them against an extremely world-class Belgium squad, who will eventually get the goals flowing.
Vicent Kompany and Thomas Vermaelen are out for Belgium’s opening game. Panama’s squad is fully fit.
Potential Belgium Starting XI: Courtois, Alderweireld, Boyata, Vertonghen, Meunier, de Bruyne, Witsel, Carrasco, Mertens, Lukaku, Hazard.
Potential Panama Starting XI: Penedo, Murillo, Machado, Torres, Escobar, Ovalle, Avila, Godoy, Gómez, Bárcenas, Torres.
Head To Head
- This is the first game between the two nations.
Key Stats & Facts
- Belgium have won 9 of their last 10 games.
- There have been over 2.5 goals in Panama’s last 3 games.
- Belgium 2/11
- Draw 13/2
- Panama 20/1
The fact that both teams are the complete opposite of each other, the most likely outcome would be for Belgium to eventually score a fair amount of goals.
