Juventus will be looking to begin their Coppa Italia campaign strongly, as they seek to win their fifth consecutive Italian Cup trophy.

In their way in the Round of 16 this weekend is a struggling Bologna side, who currently sit in 18th position in the league, with just four wins in all competitions this season.

I Bianconeri have had an almost perfect start to the season all things considered. They qualified in first place in their Champions League group, they are nine points clear in Serie A, dropping just four points thus far and are one of two sides in Europe who are undefeated domestically in the 18/19 season.

Having said that, performances are still below the incredibly high standards the club expects and many people in Italy believe there is much more to come from this Juve side. The problem they have, is quite simply, they tend to coast through games, as they go into every game the play expecting to win comfortably.

Despite dropping just four points so far this season in the league, they have struggled to win convincingly most of the time and have been vulnerable at the back especially.

This game, you would think, is a foregone conclusion before a ball is kicked, with all due respect to Bologna. Juve seem to win when they play below par, really below par and incredibly below par, so it is difficult to see anything but a routine win here, against a struggling Bologna.

With the Italian SuperCoppa coming up against Milan next week, you would think that Massimiliano Allegri will rest key players in this cup game, with a nod to that game on Wednesday. However, Juventus have the strength in depth to cope and will be expecting to see off I Rossoblu reasonably comfortably.

Team News

Juan Cuadrado and Andrea Barzagli are injured for the Bianconeri and will not play a part in this cup tie. Rodrigo Bentancur could return to the side following his suspension in the last game against Sampdoria. Joao Cancelo returned to training this week after his five-week lay-off, but is unlikely to be risked.

The home side will be without Andrea Poli through suspension, but he is the only player missing for Bologna.

Potential Bologna Starting XI: Skorupski; De Maio, Danillo, Helander; Mattiello, Orsolini, Pulgar, Nagy, Dijks; Palacio, Falcinelli

Potential Juventus Starting XI: Szczesny; De Sciglio, Rugani, Bonucci, Spinazzola; Bentancur, Can, Matuidi; Dybala, Kean, Ronaldo

Head To Head

  • The Old Lady have won 29 of their previous 40 matches against Bologna, with the Rossoblu only winning two matches ever against their visitors this weekend. Bologna’s last win over Juve came back in 2011 and Massimiliano Allegri’s side are on a 14-match unbeaten run against Bologna.

Key Stats & Facts

  • Juventus have won the Coppa Italia the past four seasons in a row and have won 17 of their last 19 games in this competition.
  • Bologna have won just four games in all competitions this season and have not been past the Round of 16 stage in this competition since the 2012/13 season.

Betting Odds

  • Bologna – 19/2
  • Draw – 4/1
  • Juventus – 1/3

The Verdict

Juventus have struggled to see off teams this season, winning with a one-goal margin in four of their last five league games, and like I said, they have an annoying tendency to get into a lead and labor for the remainder of the game.

They do give chances away through being too relaxed and losing concentration and you can bet that Bologna will play their strongest team here and will be well up for a fight. ‘BTTS’ has resulted in six of Juve’s 10 games against the bottom half sides this season and in only five of those 10 did they win by more than a one goal margin.

Bologna have taken points off some of Italy’s better sides this season, but Juventus are a different animal and I would still fully expect them to win this match but based on their performances this season, and the changes made, it could be a little bit of a scrap.
