Borussia Dortmund overcame a tricky tie against Atalanta to reach the next stage of the Europa League on Thursday night, further adding to the good work gaffer Peter Stöger has done since replacing Peter Bosz. Ex-Cologne boss Stöger is a manager that likes to get his teams defensively disciplined first and foremost so it’s hard to see a Dortmund romp in this fixture, particularly against a solid Augsburg outfit.
Markus Weinzerl did a good job at getting Augsburg, a relatively small club, into a well established Bundesliga side, work that got him the Schalke gig which unfortunately didn’t go to plan. Current head coach Manuel Baum has kept the Bavarians competitive, and digging into their expected goals for/against they have probably improved even more. Augsburg aren’t a side who splash the cash, a lot of their recruitment is through free transfers and clever buys. Away from home they tend to struggle however, especially in front of goal therefore it’s hard to see them getting anything at a resurgent Dortmund who have a new star in the form of Michy Batshauyi.
Dortmund will be without attackers Andrey Yarmolenko, Maxi Phillip and Jaden Sancho who are all injured. Wing back Jeremy Toljan is doubtful and is likely to be replaced by signing from Basel Manuel Akanji. Marco Reus is now back to full fitness after his long term injury.
Top scorer Alfred Finbogason is still out for the visitors, as is Daniel Baier who’s suspended. Impressive defender Jeffrey Gouweleeuw will be out for another month with a knee problem.
Potential Borussia Dortmund Starting XI: Burki, Piszczek, Papastathopolous, Toprak, Akanji, Sahin, Dahoud, Schurrle, Gotze, Reus, Batshauyi.
Potential Augsburg Starting XI: Hitz, Opare, Hinteregger, Danso, Max, Rani Khedira, Movarek, Heller, Caiuby, Koo, Gregoritsch.
