Venue: Vitality Stadium

After surrendering the title to their cross-city rivals on Sunday, Manchester United enter this fixture looking more toward future seasons than the current. Though they have progressed in terms of points gained this season, it seems much of the United fan base are becoming tired with the side’s lack of attacking identity. In his post-match interviews Jose Mourinho blamed his player’s over complication of the game for their most recent defeat, explaining that his side were “the masters of complicated football”.
Despite the fact that Mourinho’s men are clutching onto second place, many have begun to voice their opinions on who they think are the real challenge is for Manchester City next season. It seems the attacking and entertaining style that has been imported to the Premier League by manager’s such as Mauricio Pochettino and Jurgen Klopp, may be forcing a change in the modern supporter’s opinion on what is more important – style or results.
All of this, coupled with the looming possibility of summer transfer sagas, has heightened the need for something that the fans can hang their hat on. Seeing as though their final opportunity of that begins with a Semi Final against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, their midweek fixture versus Bournemouth may seem like somewhat of an unwanted distraction.
Bournemouth go into Wednesday’s tie in poor form defensively, conceding 19 goals in their last eight matches and winning just once. Howe has recently began to try-out different formations, switching to a 5 at the back and dropping Ryan Fraser into an unnatural wing back role. This allows Howe to choose all three of his central defenders, but has seemingly left his side more open.
Despite their shaky defence, the Bournemouth boss will take solace in his teams attacking prowess, scoring 11 goals in the same 8 games. It is important to note that these goals have been spread around the side, though the Englishman may wish for strikers Callum Wilson and Jermaine Defoe to be adding more goals to their tally. Howe will be hoping that his squad experiments may catch United by surprise, allowing his side to edge ever closer to mathematical safety.
Manchester United are with their long term number 2 Sergio Romero, whilst Phil Jones could make his first appearance since February. Bournemouth are still without long term absentees Tyrone Mings, Junior Stanislas and Adam Smith, with Callum Smith expected to return to the starting 11.
Potential Bournemouth Starting XI: De Gea, Valencia, Jones, Smalling, Shaw, Matic, Mctominay, Rashford, Lingard, Sanchez, Lukaku.
Potential Manchester United Starting XI: Begovic, Fraser, Francis, Cook, Ake, Daniels, Pugh, Cook, Gosling, King, Wilson.
