Following their lacklustre Switzerland showing, Brazil have been tasked with an unexpected taste of early tournament pressure.
The Seleção opened their World Cup campaign in uncharacteristically wasteful style, netting just once from their twenty-one attempts, at a meagre shot conversion of 4.76%.
Despite producing the most shots in the six-yard box (4) in the first round of group fixtures, the pre-tournament favourites failed to convert any of these clear cut chances, resulting in a one-goal a-piece stalemate. A two-yard sitter was notably missed by Paulinho early in the first half, which ultimately proved decisive in the Rostov-on-Don draw.
Undoubtedly, Tite’s side possess the quality to pounce on similar openings in group-game two and can be expected to show less complacency against a mediocre Costa Rica outfit, given the increased importance of this fixture.
A wounded Seleção should thrive under these circumstances and can despatch 23rd ranked Los Ticos with a minimum of fuss, having won nine out of their last ten versus nations currently placed 20th or below. Six of these victories featured ‘Half-Time/Full-Time’ score lines, which initially makes the price of 3/4 appeal for a ‘Brazil/Brazil’ win.
Since the start of 2015, Costa Rica have lost all four of their meetings against nations who place 10th or better in FIFA’s latest rankings, with the ‘Half-Time/Full-Time’ bet paying out in each of these defeats. Seven out of their previous eight losses versus top 20 ranked opposition saw the same bet land, whilst Los Ticos have also trailed at the break in their last six fixtures against similarly ranked sides.
Fred and Neymar are both doubts for Brazil.
Christian Bolanos’ bright showing from the bench in the Serbia defeat may earn him a start.
Potential Brazil Starting XI: Alisson, Danilo, Silva, Miranda, Marcelo, Casemiro, Paulinho, Willian, Coutinho, Augusto, Jesus.
Potential Costa Rica Starting XI: Navas, Gamboa, Acosta, Gonzalez, Duarte, Calvo, Bolanos, Guzman, Borges, Ruiz, Urena.
Head To Head
- Brazil have been victorious six times out of seven versus the Central Americans. They were one-nil winners the last time these two met in 2015.
Key Stats & Facts
- Costa Rica have lost 8 of their last 13 against nations who currently place higher in the FIFA World Rankings.
- Brazil – 2/9
- Draw – 61/10
- Costa Rica – 19/1
We can expect Brazil to be fully focused coming into this one after a disappointing draw in their World Cup opener. The Seleção will subsequently attempt to start strongly here and a goal or two before the break is likely. The case for Tite’s side to lead at half-time is strengthened when their opponents’ leaky recent record versus the top nations is considered. A ‘Half-Time/Full-Time’ victory therefore appears to be a shade of value at 3/4.
