Tournament favourites Brazil kick off their World Cup on the banks of the Don river against Switzerland. Excitement around the samba boys is rife and after a classy qualifying campaign it’s perfectly justified. Since Tite took them helm the Selecao have returned to their swaggering, attacking style and it’s a refreshing alternative to their former gaffer, Dunga, who opted for a more defensive and rigid formation. Their change in approach has not had a negative impact on their defensive record, however, they conceded just 11 goals in 18 qualifiers.

Switzerland unbelievably only finished 2nd in their qualifying group despite losing just a single game, against Portugal. They have to be applauded for that record, and negotiating a tricky play off with Northern Ireland in order to make the World Cup. Manager Vladimir Petkovic is good at his job, and sets his sides up to be organised and positionally aware, with the players at his disposal I’d go as far to say he has done an excellent job.

Switzerland have a settled back four and a tight, compact midfield but lack much stardust going forward; the ‘Nati’ have to rely on the ingenuity of Xherdan Shaqiri, part of a Stoke side that finished bottom of the Premier League. Haris Seferovic is their number 9, that hardly inspires confidence and the squad depth below him is very thin. Breel Embolo is a decent enough option but he’s not a traditional number 9.

Ultimately the Swiss will try and make this tough for Brazil and play for a point but the clear difference in quality is there for all to see and Brazil should get the job done fairly comfortably.

The Verdict

Brazil are rightfully heavily odds on favourites, it’s just a case of finding an angle to get with them at a more palatable quote. Given the fact it is a first round game and Switzerland’s probable defensive set up I’m going to side with a Brazil win in a game featuring less than 4 goals at odds against.

Recommended Bets

  • Brazil to win and under 3.5 goals – 11/10 (Coral)
