United will come into this one hoping to revitalise their season under new man Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The familiar face returns to the Red Devils and his first game in charge he will face the only other English club he has managed in Cardiff. Despite the early news suggesting United were going to fill the role internally for the remainder of the season it was less than 24 hours after Mourinho’s sacking that The Baby-faced Assassin was announced.
Cardiff will have seen it is a perfect time to play united before Jose’s sacking, with the team clearly extremely low on confidence and with no recognised stability amongst them. It will certainly become a very different challenge for the Bluebirds now with Solskjaer keen to make a memorable first impression back at his old club after they sacked him in 2014.
Although they have definitely improved since the season has progressed Cardiff are still only 2 points clear of the drop zone, so if results go against them, they could be in the bottom 3 for the start of the Christmas period. United will be hoping to get the 3 points to try to close the already humongous gap between them and League leaders Liverpool, which is currently sat at 19 points. Although admittedly I’m sure Solskjaer will be aiming slightly more realistic with the hope of minimising their distance to the top 4 which is still an extensive 11 points.
Cardiff will only be without defender Jazz Richards, who has missed almost the entire first half of the campaign due to numerous injuries.
United will be without Alexis Sanchez as he will not be fit in time. However, there is a possible return for a number of United players including Smalling, Rojo, Shaw and McTominay.
Potential Cardiff Starting XI: Etheridge, Bennett, Bamba, Morrison, Ecuele Manga, Gunnartsson, Hoilett Camarasa, Arter, Murphy, Paterson
Potential Manchester United Starting XI: De Gea, Valencia, Bailly, Lindelof, Young, Matic, Herrera, Pogba, Rashford, Lukaku, Lingard.
Head To Head
- Cardiff and Manchester United have only met previously twice in the last 42 years, in which United came out victorious 2-0 in their home fixture and drew 2-2 away at the Bluebirds.
- Across History Cardiff have only won 1 of their last 12 league matches against the Red Devils, a 3-0 win in November 1960.
Key Stats & Facts
- United have a new man in charge with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer taking charge of his first game having been named the caretaker manager for the rest of the season.
- Cardiff come into the game in extremely strong home form, having won 4 of their last 5 at the City Ground.
- United come into the game with only 1 away win in the last 5 premier league games, a 2-1 victory over Bournemouth.
- Cardiff 11/2
- Draw 16/5
- Manchester United 4/7
Solskjaer has shown himself to be a fiery character in management, and I can only imagine he will try to inject some of that passion into the lackluster performances that United have been providing of late.
On top of this Michael Oliver will be the Referee for the game, who has given out 17 yellows and 2 reds across his last 5 games.
Pogba will be expected to return after falling out of favour under Jose and I would expect him to be keen to make a point of why they paid £89 million for him.
