An out of form Wolves side make the trip to the Welsh capital hoping to get back on track after failing to win in their last 5 premier league encounters.

Wolves manager Nuno was branded ‘a disgrace’ by Cardiff gaffer Neil Warnock last season when the pair met in April. This came after a match that pretty much sealed the title for the Old Gold in April; emotions were high after Cardiff missed two stoppage time penalties. The pair refused to shake hands post-match and it will be interesting to see if anything kicks off again as they meet in the first division for the first time since 1962.

Wolves were a short price to defeat Huddersfield last week and deservedly lost 2-0. They struggled to break through a compact defence, they were out-thought and out-fought by the terriers tenacious midfield. That loss prolonged their winless run and 6/5 quotes on them to get the better of a dogged Cardiff side look too short to me.

Having said that, the Black Country boys have performed well over the key shot metrics this season, especially impressive when you consider they’ve played Man City, Spurs, Arsenal and Man United. Maybe the data is swaying the books but I think this Wolves side are better suited to playing the big teams where they can counter attack.

The Bluebirds on the other hand have picked up a couple of home wins lately against Fulham and Brighton. They rarely get battered either; losses by a 1-0 scoreline to Everton, Spurs and Leicester show that. They keep games competitive and given Wolves’ scoring problems I can see them being in this game.

Team News

Cardiff are without Kenneth Zohore, Nathaniel Mendez-Laing is also a doubt.

Wolves remain without full back Jonny Otto but have no new injury concerns.

Potential Cardiff Starting XI: Etheridge, Manga, Morrison, Bamba, Cunningham, Gunarsson, Camarasa, Arter, Murphy, Harris, Paterson.

Potential Wolves Starting XI: Patricio, Doherty, Coady, Bennett, Boly, Vinagre, Moutinho, Neves, Costa, Cavaleiro, Jimenez.

Key Stats & Facts

  • Under 2.5 goals has landed in 11 of Wolves’ last 12 premier league games.
  • Cardiff have scored the first goal only once this season, away to Chelsea.

Betting Odds

  • Cardiff – 14/5
  • Draw – 9/4
  • Wolves – 5/4

The Verdict

I’m expecting a tight and trappy affair here, especially in the first half. Wolves games very rarely have first half goals, plenty of their games have gone into the break goalless and given that along with Cardiff’s struggle to open the scoring I’m happy to plump for the 0-0 half time correct score at 153/100 with MarathonBet.

I’m not expecting many goals here and nor are the bookies. However, that means we’re getting decent prices on goalscorers. Callum Paterson is the main man up top for the hosts and he’s bagged 3 of the sides last 5, so should he be as big as 9/2? I don’t think so. That’s value in my book and I’m happy to put up the Scot to add to his tally on Friday night.
