Celtic v Motherwell Betting Preview
Date: 19th May
Venue: Hampden Park
Channel: Sky Sports Football & BBC One Scotland
Celtic go into Saturday’s Scottish Cup final with the chance of writing football history. On top of the fact that Brendan Rodgers’ men have the chance to retain the Scottish Cup, a win for The Hoops would see them complete a back-to-back domestic treble. This is a feat that has never been done before and will mean Celtic have won every obtainable Scottish trophy since the Northern Irish manager took charge back in 2016.
The team in their way? Motherwell. Steve Robinson has guided ‘Well to a 7th place finish, just one point short of Hearts in sixth. The Steelmen head into this weekend’s fixture in reasonably good form having won three of their last five, including back to back clean sheets in their previous two outings (Hamilton Academical, 3-0 & Partick Thistle, 0-1).
Over a ten-game period ‘Wells’ form looks even more promising as they have a managed a clean sheet in five of their last ten matches, including a hard-fought 0-0 against Scottish champions and Saturday’s opponents, Celtic.
A shock win for Robinson’s men would give them the chance to play European football again having been missing out on European nights since the 2014-15 season. ‘Well are more than capable of upsetting here having already beating Hearts and Aberdeen on their way to the final.
Ryan Bowman has been on target 11 times this season and scored once in the 3-0 semi-final win over Aberdeen. Curtis Main is ‘Wells favourite to score anytime at 9/4 and having scored a brace in the semi-final, the ‘romance of the FA Cup’ would suggest the striker may continue his fairy-tale story.
Celtic hold the record for most Scottish Cup titles with 37 and the bookies certainly back The Bhoys to get their hands on a 38th, with odds as little as 2/7 for Celtic to win in 90 minutes. Rodgers can take confidence in the fact that his side hasn’t lost to Motherwell under his reign, winning six and drawing two.
However, an end of season dip has seen Celtic hit poor form, especially by their high standards, winning just two of the last five, drawing once and losing twice. Considering ‘Wells’ defensive record and the fact that Celtic have failed to score in their previous two fixtures (0-0 vs Kilmarnock & 0-1 vs Aberdeen), a ‘bore-draw’ (0-0) looks good value at 16/1, the ‘safer’ option being under 2.5 goals at 5/4.
If Celtic were to run riot and put five past Motherwell like they did towards the end of last year, there seems to be no safe-bet on a Celtic goal-scorer as the goals have been shared amongst the forwards this season. Leigh Griffiths is odds-on to score in 90 mins at 4/6 but is only 4th on Celtic top goal scorer list. Scott Sinclair, Moussa Dembele and James Forrest have all managed more goals this season and are available at longer odds.
Motherwell manager Stephen Robinson rested several of his first team players before their match against Hamilton on Saturday – so it should be a fresh-faced team for ‘Well.
Injury worries Carl McHugh, Liam Grimshaw, Cedric Kipre and Curtis Main have all been declared fit to play this weekend.
For Celtic, shot-stopper Craig Gordon and pacey striker Odsonne Edouard are doubts, but there is some good news for Celtic fans as Leigh Griffiths should be available for selection after coming off the bench last vs Aberdeen.
Potential Celtic Starting XI: Bain, Lustig, Boyata, Ajer, Tierney, Brown, Ntcham, Sinclair, Rogic, Forrest, Griffiths.
Potential Motherwell Starting XI: Carson, Kipre, Aldred, Dunne, Campbell, Grimshaw, Cadeen, Tait, Main, Bowman.
