Wednesday night sees Celtic face off against Rosenborg in the 3rd round of Champions League Qualifying first leg. Celtic come into the game off the back of an easy 6-0 aggregate score line against Armenian minnows Alashkert. The 3rd round sees the Bhoys take on a familiar foe in Rosenborg, having beaten the Norwegians in the same round of the competition last season thanks to a James Forrest goal in the Second leg in Norway.
The first leg of this tie will be played at Celtic park and it gives the Hoops the perfect chance to get a healthy lead to take into the second leg. Last time out Celtic scored within the first 10 minutes of the match to put the tie beyond any doubt. Brendan Rodgers has recently been praising the new 1.5 million pound pitch that has been installed at Celtic Park, in his words it will help Celtic bring a “different level” to their game. Rodgers believes that this new pitch will help give Celtic a quickness to their game and a quick passing game will definitely help them against what could be a stubborn Rosenborg side on Wednesday night.
Rosenborg are currently in a bit of turmoil having sacked their manager Kare Ingebrigtsen after their last minute win against Icelandic side Valur. The Players have been outspoken in their criticism of the board’s decision and there are still grey clouds hanging over the team ahead of the trip to what should be a boisterous Celtic Park crowd. Rosenborg have replaced their former manager with Dutch coach Rini Coolen, who was recently sacked by Carribean minnows Aruba, which doesn’t bode well. He now has to get the Rosenborg players on his side for an extremely tough game against treble winning Celtic.
Odsonne Edouard has been in good form and will be looked upon to grab the goals again in Wednesday night’s tie.
Celtic’s potency in front of goal in their pre-season and Roseborg’s current managerial situation leads me to think that there could be plenty of goals in Celtic’s favour. For the Hoops to win and there to be over 2.5 goals in the match is currently priced at 13/10 (Betway)
With Celtic looking for a quick start we can take a look at when the first Celtic goal will be scored. Ladbrokes are currently 11/2 for Celtic to score inside minute 0-10 as they did so in their last competitive game against Alashkert.
Rosenborg do have some hope in this game as they have scored 9 goals in their last 10 away games. Former Arsenal Striker Niklas Bendtner will most likely be leading the line for the Norwegians and he can be backed to score at any time in the match at 9/4 (Skybet).
Celtic striker, Leigh Griffiths, remains a major doubt as he continues to struggle with an injury. The Bhoys will also be without Jozo Simunovic after the defender saw red in the previous round against Alashkert.
Rosenborg are in turmoil after sacking boss Kare Ingebrigtsen and arrive at Celtic Park with the players openly criticising the board. Dutch coach Rini Coolen will be in charge for the upcoming tie. He has been sacked from his last five jobs, including Carribean minnows, Aruba.
Potential Celtic Starting XI: Gordon, Hendry, Ajer, Ralston, Forrest, Ntcham, Brown, Rogic, Mcgregor, Sinclair, Edouard.
Potential Rosenborg Starting XI: Hansen, Hedenstead Reginiussen, Hovland, Meling, Trodsen, Lundemo, Jensen, Helland, Bendtner, Levi
Head To Head
- The two sides have met as recently as 2017 in the third round of qualifying for the Champions League. A James Forrest goal in Norway put Celtic through to the fourth round of qualifying.
Key Stats & Facts
- Rosenborg have scored a goal in 9 out of their last 10 away games.
- Celtic have scored at least 3 goals in their last 4 games and have only conceded 1 goal in their last 5.
- Celti 7/19
- Draw 4/1
- Rosenborg 10/1
Celtic will be looking to take advantage of playing in front of their own crowd in this first leg. With Rosenborg potentially distracted by goings on in the boardroom it could be a match where goals flow for the boys in green and white.
