Chelsea and Manchester United lock horns in the 137th FA Cup final at Wembley this Saturday.
With the season finally drawing to a close last weekend and neither of these sides leaving much to be desired in the league, their final domestic game of the season remains their only hope of silverware in an otherwise lacklustre campaign.
In terms of Manchester United, lacklustre may seem a harsh description of a season that’s seen them finish 2nd in the league (comfortably) after only managing a top five finish this time last year. However, the 19 point gap that noisy neighbours Manchester City bridged throughout the majority of the season has left United fans with a bitter outlook on a title assault that never really gathered any substance. Add to that the rather embarrassing last 16 exit from this years Champions League against Sevilla, this FA Cup final really is the only saving grace from a disappointing season for Jose Mourinho.
It could be worse though, Mourinho’s former employers Chelsea have suffered post champions syndrome of the highest degree in their second season under Antonio Conte. The Italian has not only failed to keep pace with Guardiola’s City side in the title race, but he has been equally inept in securing Chelsea’s Champions League status for next season. They will play their European football in the not so convenient Europa League next season, a competition they did win in 2013 under Rafael Benitez. It appears Conte will leave Chelsea despite the result on Saturday, though he’ll be aiming to finish his short time in England on a high in his second FA Cup final in two seasons, the previous ending in a 2-1 defeat to Arsenal last May.
In my opinion, I see a tight game and so do the bookies. Mourinho’s record in one off games such as this is pretty remarkable, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see him do a job on his former club. Nonetheless, with Conte on his way, I’m sure his Chelsea players will be keen to wish him a fond farewell with one last hurrah at Wembley. Enjoy the game.
Luiz (knee) and Drinkwater (calf) are the only absentees for Chelsea.
United may be without Martial who picked up an injury against Watford. Lukaku faces a late fitness test. Fellaini is also a doubt.
Chelsea Potential Starting XI: Courtois, Azpilicueta, Cristensen, Cahill, Moses, Fabregas, Kante, Willian, Hazard, Morata, Giroud
Man United Potential Starting XI: De Gea, Valencia, Smalling, Bailly, Young, Matic, Pogba, Herrera, Mata, Sanchez, Rashford
