- Time: 17:30
- Venue: Stamford Bridge

Both teams square off under the lights at Stamford Bridge with Chelsea the heavy odds on favourite to see the mighty Toon off. Lady luck has not been great for the visitors with just one victory in the last nine, and have an FA Cup replay to prepare for. Chelsea will look to stay in contention within the top four, which could see the host capitalise here, but I am not expecting a goal fest here.
Alvaro Morata missed Chelsea’s EFL Cup semi-final first leg defeat to Tottenham with a hamstring injury and is not expected to feature here either.
Eden Hazard is expected to continue in a false nine position, which should grant Callum Hudson-Odoi another starting berth on the left wing. Pedro is back from injury and will challenge Willian for a spot on the opposite flank.
Cesc Fàbregas is waiting to join Monaco and has already played his final game for Chelsea. With Ruben Loftus-Cheek ruled out, Ross Barkley or Matteo Kovacic will battle for one spot in midfield
Ki Sung-yueng and Yoshinori Muto are on Asian Cup duty and won’t be available for the rest of the month.
Federico Fernández was pictured back in first-team training on Thursday, but Mohamed Diame, Jonjo Shelvey and Paul Dummett were all absent. The aforementioned trio went to Barcelona in the week for assessment on injuries.
Florian Lejeune made his first Newcastle appearance of the season in the FA Cup third round to boost Benitez’s defensive options. Ciaran Clark has also recovered from injury
Potential Chelsea Starting XI: Arrizabalaga, Azpilicueta, Rudiger, Luiz, Alonso, Kovacic, Jorginho, Kante, Pedro, Hazard and Hudson-Odoi
Potential Newcastle Starting XI: Dubravka, Yedlin, Fernandez, Lascelles, Clark, Manquillo, Perez, Hayden, Shelvey, Ritchie and Rondon
Head To Head
- Chelsea 4-1-1 (last six)
Key Stats & Facts
- Chelsea won the reverse fixture 2-1 and have won their last six home meetings with Newcastle in all competitions.
- Chelsea have been winning at the break and at the final whistle in their last six meetings with Newcastle.
- Chelsea have seen over 2.5 goals in their last six meetings with Newcastle at home.
- Chelsea are undefeated in 13 of their last 14 home league matches.
- Chelsea – 2/9 Skybet
- Draw – 11/2 BetVictor
- Newcastle – 16/1 BetVictor
From a layer’s point of view, BetVictor are keen on taking on the visiting side and the draw offering best price. This is despite Chelsea not looking overly convincing in recent weeks. On the clean sheet front, Chelsea have been effective with BetVictor again best price on both teams to score no at 13/20. Those believing this to be the case could take the 20/23 price on the blues winning to nil. Newcastle have only won one of their last nine matches and with the hosts winning all of the last six meetings at home to the mighty toon suggests how effective Chelsea have been at home in this particular fixture.
I vision Chelsea being backed on thousands of accumulators and with Newcastle not in the best of places, this could be a good old fashioned 2-0 Chelsea performance, which could be backed around the 5/1 mark in the industry.
This might not be a classic and could well be a case of Chelsea doing just enough to get over the line. With their clean sheet record in recent outings, there could be worse bets out there this weekend. I was also tempted with both sides to get 4+ corners on the Skybet specials market at 6/4, which could be worth a nibble.
