Not many would’ve fancied Chesterfield to struggle this season, especially given their strong seasons in league 2 in the recent past. Among their roster, the Spireites have ex-Championship and league 1 experience in the shape of Ian Evatt, Giles Coke, Chris O’Grady and Robbie Weir however it’s not clicked all season long which must be majorly frustrating for their fans. Defensively they’ve been porous, with the aforementioned Evatt past it and a failure to get a settled back four the major issue for player-turned-gaffer Jack Lester. Vitally, the Derbyshire-based club have two games in hand on 22nd placed Grimsby Town and should they win those they will go level on points with the Mariners.
It’s been a different story down the M1 at Notts County though. Kevin Nolan has done a great job at one of his first permanent managerial roles, he has made County competitive in almost every game and has them currently sitting in 4th place with automatic promotion still a possibility. Up-front the Magpies have the evergreen duo of Shola Ameobi and Jon Stead who have both chipped in with their fair share of goals, but the real star of this team is on loan from City rivals Forest in Jorge Grant. It was a surprise to many to see Grant extend his loan for the rest of the season with league 1 clubs sniffing about so full credit to the club for securing that deal. Operating in a free role behind the strikers he has chipped in with 15 goals which could prove pivotal for County come the end of the season.
With arguably everything to play for, for both teams, I can see a rather open game here. Both sides have been scoring of late but neither are watertight at the back, especially Chesterfield and therefore I think the value is in the goals-based markets.
Ross Fitzsimons could be out for the visitors in this one whereas Joe Anyon should return in net for the hosts.
