A relatively inexperienced Costa Rica team will take on a Serbian side bursting with talent on Saturday. Costa Rica, who blew up on the international scene during the last World Cup after shocking everyone by progressing to the latter stages of the tournament, will be keen to replicate their performance 4 years ago.
Seven members from Serbia’s under-20s World Cup winning team have been included in this squad by Mladen Krstajic, who took over from Slavoljub Muslin after the latter was sacked after a poor run of games. Aleksandar Mitrović will lead the the forward line, with the support from midfield coming from breakthrough star Milinković-Savić and Nemanja Matić to also aid him.
Costa Rica will rely heavily on multiple Champions League winner Keylor Navas in goal, whilst also turning to ex-Fulham striker Bryan Ruiz to help in attack. However, Serbia will find it difficult to break down the Central American’s defence due to their use of the 5-4-1 formation, but individual quality is what really sets the two sides apart and what will ultimately be the deciding factor for the match, something that was evident in Costa Rica’s 4-1 thrashing by Belgium in their last friendly, so it’s unlikely that the Ticos will replicate their previous performances.
Ronald Matarrita has been ruled out of the World Cup with a hamstring injury, but Serbia have a fully fit squad.
Potential Costa Rica Starting XI: Navas, Gamboa, González, Acosta, Duarte, Oviedo, Ruiz, Borges, Guzmán, Bolaños, Ureña.
Potential Serbia Starting XI: Stojković, Ivanović, Milenković, Tosić, Kolarov, Matić, Milinković-Savić, Tadić, Ljajić, Kostić, Mitrović.
Head To Head
- This is the first meeting between the two nations.
Key Stats & Facts
- Serbia are undefeated in 12 of their last 13 matches.
- Costa Rica are undefeated in their last 5 World Cup matches and could equal a record if they avoid defeat.
- Costa Rica 4/1
- Draw 9/4
- Serbia 10/11
Despite Costa Rica’s two solid lines of defence, they won’t be enough to keep Serbia’s individual talent from finally breaking it down.
