Two of the bigger clubs in the division meet in this gargantuan play off battle. Under Mark Robins’ tutelage Coventry have tended to be defensively sound and nicking wins here and there, but that ethos has strangely been thrown out of the window in the final quarter of the season. In their last 11 fixtures the Sky Blues have seen an average of 4 goals a game, and that’s included a bizarre 6-2 defeat at home to lowly Yeovil and a 6-1 victory at Cheltenham, weird eh? It means there’s an aura of confusion around the club and their inconsistent nature doesn’t make them an attractive bet at evens.
Coventry have a relatively young squad and some might question if their inexperience will be a negative factor now the pressure is seriously on, however they reached the EFL trophy final last year and they’ve been blooded in for a long time now so that shouldn’t be so much of a problem. Notts County are the polar opposite in experience with the wily Jon Stead and the evergreen Shola Ameobi up top, probably the most experienced strike partnership in the entire Football League.
Operating behind the two big men is the classy figure of Jorge Grant, he revels in between the lines of midfield and defence and also times his runs in the box very well. His influence has reduced in the second half of the season but his form in the first half of the campaign was superb and ultimately unsustainable, he needs to be on form if County are to make Wembley one would feel.
Neither of these teams come into the play offs in a consistently strong run of form and therefore it makes it a tricky game to call. There will be 15,000+ at the Ricoh and that should give a boost to the home side and they will want to go into the second leg with an advantage but I can’t see the value in them at the prices. With the home side leaking goals recently but also scoring it draws my eye to the BTTS market and I was surprised to see an Odds-against price of 21/20 with Coral.
Tony Andreu and Jodi Jones are both out for the home side.
Mason Bennett is unlikely to feature for Notts County due to injury.
Potential Coventry Starting XI: Burge, Grimmer, Hyam, Davies, Stokes, Bayliss, Kelly, Doyle, Shipley, McNulty, Clarke-Harris.
Potential Notts County Starting XI: Collin, Tootle, Duffy, Brisley, Jones, Milsom, Hewitt, O’Connor, Grant, Ameobi, Stead.
