England travel to Zagreb tomorrow to face World Cup runners-up, Croatia, in their UEFA Nations League group match.
England and Croatia have both been beaten by Spain in their opening fixture, England going down 2-1 whilst Croatia were thumped 6-0 by the Spaniards.
Both sides need a result of some kind so strong sides are expected from both managers. Croatia are struggling with injuries and retirements, meaning their side to play tomorrow might look slightly different for the one that beat England in the World Cup.
England have always been strong in qualifying campaigns, which is what this new format essentially boils down to, so the 2/1 for an away win certainly appeals. Croatia have so much quality in midfield with Modric, Rakitic, Perisic and Kovacic so you would fancy them to cause England problems.
England are also struggling with injuries so a few players will get a chance to impress here. The youngsters on the bench will also be desperate to make an impression and earn England their first three points.
Both sides have plenty of attacking quality so an entertaining game should ensue.
Sime Vrsaljko and Marcelo Brozovic have withdrawn from the side, whilst Danijel Subasic and Mario Mandzukic have retired from international football. Lovre Kalinic and Borna Barisic are also ruled out.
Luke Shaw and James Tarkowski have been withdrawn from the squad through injury, whilst Jesse Lingard, Dele Ali and Ruben Loftus-Cheeks are also unavailable. Danny Rose has also pulled out of the squad.
Potential Croatia Starting XI: Livakovic; Jedvaj, Lovren, Vida, Pivaric; Rebic, Modric, Kovacic, Rakitic, Perisic; Santini
Potential England Starting XI: Pickford; Gomez, Stones, Maguire; Trippier, Winks, Henderson, Barkley, Chillwell; Kane, Sterling
Head To Head
- Croatia knocked England out of the World Cup in the semi finals after a 2-1 extra-time win and the record now stands at 4-4 in the head-to-head.
Key Stats & Facts
- Croatia are undefeated in their last 8 home games.
- England have won their last three away games without conceding.
- Croatia – 33/20
- Draw – 9/4
- England – 2/1
With both sides losing in their opening game, avoiding defeat is almost imperative to avoid relegation to the B league.
There is plenty of talent and quality in both sides and this game looks very evenly matched, so the draw looks the most likely result and one both managers would be happy with.
Neither side keep many clean sheets and Croatia looked terrible defensively against Spain, which will give England plenty of encouragement, whilst England have kept just three clean sheets in 12 games.
