Roma could move closer to securing a Round of 16 berth when they travel to CSKA Moscow on Wednesday.
The Giallorossi haven’t had the best form as of late in Serie A; they are winless in their last three league games. However, this form hasn’t carried over to Champions League, where they find themselves in a fantastic position to perhaps qualify for the Round of 16 at the top of the table for the second straight year.
Despite their 3-0 loss at the Bernabeu against Real Madrid on the opening matchday, Roma bounced back with consecutive home victories. They defeated Viktoria Plzen 5-0, while a fortnight ago beat CSKA 3-0 at the Stadio Olimpico.
Most impressively, Edin Dzeko has shown why he is considered one of Roma’s best players in Europe’s premier club competition, with a hat-trick and brace in his side’s last two respective Champions League matches. Dzeko along with Lionel Messi are the leading goalscorers in this season’s competition with five goals apiece, as the Bosnian will be looking to add to his tally on Wednesday.
However, trips to Russia aren’t necessarily so easy. These sides met in the Group Stage of the 2014-15 season, where CSKA were able to hold their Italian opponents to a 1-1 home draw. They also defeated Real Madrid here in October, so Roma will definitely have their work cut out for them should they return to the peninsula with three points.
CSKA Moscow will be without Konstantin Kuchayev, Viktor Vasin and Kristijan Bistrovic for the match, while Roma are missing Luca Pellegrini for the trip to Russia while Daniele De Rossi and Diego Perotti are in doubt for the match.
Potential CSKA Moscow Starting XI: Akinfeev, Mario Fernandes, Rodrigo Becao, Nababkin, Dzagoev, Akhmetov, Oblyakov, Sigurdsson, Vlasic, Chalov
Potential AS Roma Starting XI: Olsen, Santon, Manolas, Fazio, Kolarov, N’Zonzi, Cristante Lorenzo Pellegrini, Under, Dzeko, El Shaarawy
Key Stats & Facts
- CSKA’s last win against Roma came in October 1991 in the Cup Winners Cup.
- Roma have lost their last five away Champions League games, conceding 16 goals.
- CSKA – 31/10
- Draw – 27/10

I believe that Roma will get the job done in Russia. I can’t see them dropping a valuable three points on the road here, despite how tough conditions may be. Edin Dzeko was the x factor the last time these two teams met and I expect another great performance from the big man.
Skybet currently have great value in the score/win market. Edin Dzeko to score and Roma to win is currently paying 2/1.
