Derby County guaranteed their play-off spot after an impressive win over a now-relegated Barnsley side. They face Fulham in the first leg, a team that narrowly missed out on the automatic promotion sport to Cardiff after they failed to overcome Birmingham and better the Welsh side’s result.
This is Derby’s seventh promotion push, of which only one season was successful and only one team in the previous 12 seasons has been promoted after finishing sixth. After their defeat last week at St Andrew’s, Fulham’s incredible run of 23 unbeaten games finally came to an end. The Cottagers have been one of the best attacking forces in the league, with Aleksandar Mitrović scoring 12 goals since debuting in February and young Ryan Sessegnon with a further 15. However, Deeby have also been scoring the goals, with main man Matej Vydra’s tally racking up to 21 goals for the season- the most of any Championship player.
All in all, promotion play-offs are always intense and extremely cautious, with all the teams in question being forced to think a little harder and for longer, because their whole seasons have been boiling up to this point- and any sort of mistake would see all their hard work go down the drain.
Sam Winnalll and Ikechi Anya are both out for Derby.
Fulham have the fortune of boasting a full squad.
Potential Derby Starting XI: Carson, Forsyth, Keogh, Davies, Wisdom, Huddlestone, Johnson, Olsson, Lawrence, Vydra, Jerome.
Potential Fulham Starting XI: Bettinelli, Fredericks, Odoi, Ream, Targett, Johanssen, Cairney, McDonald, Ayité, Mitrović, Sessegnon.
