Milan travel to Tuscany tonight to take on Empoli, in search for their first win in three starts following two consecutive draws.
The Rossoneri head into the game in search over consistency; they have performed well so far in the new campaign but haven’t had the results to show for it. Last week, they were heartbreakingly denied a draw at home to Atalanta after Emiliano Rigoni’s stoppage time equaliser. Their last win came on September 1, where they defeated Roma thanks to Patrick Cutrone’s last minute winner. Gennaro Gattuso will be hoping for a better showing and the three points in Tuscany; he knows his team are more than capable of a top four finish this season.
Meanwhile, Empoli are winless since their 2-0 opening round over Cagliari. They have lost their past two games, including last weekend’s 3-1 loss at Sassuolo. This is an important match for Aurelio Andreazzoli’s men as they are hoping for survival in the Serie A this season – an uphill battle but they are more than capable of doing so. A strong showing in this match could very well allow the Azzurri to show the rest of the league that they aren’t pushovers, however they come up against a very strong Milan side.
Ivan Strinic and Andrea Conti are still long-term injuries, while Mattia Caldara is still injured after an injury picked up in the Europa League. Ignazio Abate is expected to take the place of Davide Calabria, as the right back battles the flu.
Empoli, however, have an even bigger injury list. Manuel Pasqual, Afriyie Acquah, Luca Antonelli, Alejandro Rodriguez and Lorenzo Polvani are all sidelined, so Andreazzoli must do some shuffling around on the park. Miha Zajc is also unavailable for the game, as he is suspended following his red card on the weekend.
Potential Empoli Starting XI: Terracciano, Di Lorenzo, Silvestre, Maietta, Veseli, Bennacer, Capezzi, Krunic, Traore, La Gumina, Caputo
Potenial AC Milan Starting XI: Donnarumma, Abate, Musacchio, Romagnoli, Rodriguez, Kessie, Biglia, Bonaventura, Suso, Higuain, Calhanoglu
Stats & Facts
- Fixtures between these teams are generally high-scoring – five of the last six contests have ended with Over 2.5 goals.
- Empoli triumphed the last time these two sides met – a 2-1 victory at the San Siro.
- Empoli – 7/2
- Draw – 13/5
- Milan – 19/20
I can’t see any other result than Milan taking the three points back home with them. They are a much stronger side and with Empoli’s growing injury list, Milan should win this comfortably. Gattuso will be hoping this game spurs on his side before they head to high-flying Sassuolo this weekend.
Gonzalo Higuain has finally broken his Milan drought, and the goals are expected to keep flowing for the striker. bet365 are offering 6/1 for the Argentine to score 2 or more goals which is great value considering his recent form and Empoli’s defensive woes.
