Fresh from their three-goal despatching of Northern Ireland last weekend, Costa Rica will hope to be England’s spoilers once again on Thursday.
Four years ago, the Three Lions’ elimination from the World Cup was confirmed after a goalless group game with the Central American’s, a result which personified Roy Hodgson’s side’s dismal display in Brazil.
Óscar Ramírez’s current crop of talent place a respectable 25th in the latest rankings and should match-up as competitive opponents for Gareth Southgate’s 23-man squad, having qualified for this year’s World Cup in impressive fashion.
Captained by ex-Fulham playmaker Bryan Ruiz, ‘Los Ticos’ enjoyed an unbeaten campaign and finished six points above England’s final Group G opponents, Panama, placing first in their four-nation table.
However, despite losing just once in their last eighteen on home soil, three wins, two draws, and six losses in their previous eleven away internationals can be considered a poor return. Having only beaten Scotland, Honduras, and the United States in the aforementioned period, nations who have all failed to qualify for the upcoming tournament in Russia, Costa Rica’s conflicting form on their travels can be considered to be their primary downfall.
A fourteen-game unbeaten home streak for England somewhat contrasts their opponents’ away troubles. Since undertaking the manager’s role in November 2016, Gareth Southgate has been victorious four out of five times on home turf versus nations ranked 20th and below. When comparing this to Costa Rica’s six away defeats in nine against top 20 opposition, it is no surprise to see little value on offer for a straight home win.
With the Three Lions’ recent defensive solidarity, having kept six clean sheets in their last nine, opposing goals looks to be the way to go here. Southgate’s men are best priced at 2/5 to win with Marathon, however when adding the under 3.5 goals market to the equation, an odds-against offer of 21/20 can be snatched up with Betway.
This bet has paid out in England’s twelve most recent home victories, whilst eight of Gareth Southgate’s nine wins have also featured three goals or below.
Including eight of their previous nine ‘friendly’ defeats, less than four goals have also been scored in twenty-two of Costa Rica’s last twenty-three internationals.
Liverpool duo Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jordan Henderson have joined up with the England squad after being excluded from the Nigeria fixture following the Champions League final. Burnley’s Nick Pope is expected to feature in some capacity.
Notable inclusions in Costa Rica’s squad are: Keylor Navas, Bryan Oviedo, Bryan Ruiz, and Joel Campbell.
Potential England Starting XI: Pickford, Walker, Stones, Maguire, Alexander-Arnold, Rose, Henderson, Alli, Lingard, Vardy, Kane.
Potential Costa Rica Starting XI: Navas, Gamboa, Zwane, Gonzalez, Duarte, Oviedo, Guzman, Ruiz, Campbell, Colindres, Venegas.
Head To Head
- The only previous meeting between the sides ended goalless at the Mineirão in 2014.
Key Stats & Facts
- England are unbeaten in their last 8 friendlies.
- 10 of Costa Rica’s last 11 defeats have been ‘to nil’.
- England – 2/5
- Draw – 4/1
- Costa Rica – 19/2
Costa Rica could look to shut out their opponents at Elland Road and generally employ a similar ‘wing-back’ formation to England, which may result in a low-scoring game. The Three Lions are expected to pick up a win here, but the home side’s short price does not provide any value. By factoring in a low-scoring affair, the price of 21/20 for a home victory and under 3.5 goals appears to be overpriced and should be backed.
