With the most prestigious event in world football less than three months away, England boss Gareth Southgate will be keen to make every second count. The last set of friendlies in preparation for the tournament come after the manager’s final squad is announced, making the friendly versus Italy the final chance for players to book themselves a seat on the plane to Russia.
A comfortable if not spectacular win away against the Netherlands, has put England on a 7 game unbeaten streak, with clean sheets in their last 5. After Southgate hinted at the likelihood for rotation in Tuesday’s game, we could see debuts for surprise call ups James Tarkowski, Alfie Mawson and Lewis Cook.
A nightmarish World Cup qualifying campaign will have the Azzurri hoping for better times ahead. A 2-0 loss to Argentina on Friday wasn’t the best start for temporary boss Luigi Di Biagio, who was promoted from the Under 21’s after Giampiero Ventura was relieved of his duties.
Before the squads were announced, reports suggested that Di Biagio would revamp the side ahead of the Euro 2020 qualifying campaign, possibly promoting a number of promising players from the under ages. However, with the exception of Milan’s Patrick Cutrone, it seems the Italian has opted for experience over exuberance.
As well as their issues in qualification, Italy’s record in friendlies away from home leaves a lot to be desired. Out of their last 17 away friendlies, they have won just 3 – losing 5 out of their last 7.
Jack Wilshere has returned to Arsenal having not travelled to Amsterdam because of tendonitis, whilst Joe Gomez will miss the home friendly after injuring his ankle against Holland. With no fresh injury concerns, Italy’s caretaker manager will have a full squad to pick from, with the possibility of a debut of Gianmarco Ferrari.
Potential England Starting XI: Butland, Tarkowski, Maguire, Mawson, Walker, Dier, Cook, Young, Alli, Lallana, Vardy.
Potential Italy Starting XI: Buffon, Zappacosta, Ferrari, Bonucci, Darmian, Gagliardini, Verratti, Bonaventura, Candreva, Belotti, Insigne.
