With less than 2 weeks until the World Cup starts the fever pitch has officially begun, and England play their first friendly against Nigeria this weekend.
Hopes are somewhat high for this England squad with the likes of Harry Kane, Kyle Walker, and Raheem sterling have great seasons, backed up by a support cast of Jamie Vardy, Delle Alli, and Jesse Lingard. Still, the squad selection did raise a few eyebrows, especially around the inclusion of Cahill and Welbeck, yet there is still enough hope around the squad that a good run can be made (don’t we say that every tournament though?)
It looks like Southgate will be setting up with 5 at the back this tournament, which makes sense given the inclusion of Ashley Young and Fabian Delph, who have both been shifted from midfielders to full/wing backs this season. On top of that you’ve got Alexander-Arnold and Kieran Trippier in the squad, which means everything points to Kyle Walker playing a CB role. These games are massively important for the squad to gel together and for Southgate to try different things here and there, so expect to see a lot of variation along the way.
Of the 5 African teams that have qualified for the group stages Nigeria have one of the tougher groups to get out of, so they will be looking to get as much good preparation in as possible, and will relish the chance to play against England at Wembley. There are plenty of familiar faces in the Nigerian line up such as Moses, Mikel and Ighalo, so there is plenty of pedigree within the squad, meaning they will offer some resistance.
Between the two squads only Nigeria have a player missing and that is Wilfred Ndidi who is out through injury.
England Potential Starting XI – Pickford; Trippier, Walker, Stones, Maguire, Rose; Dier, Delph, Lingard; Kane, Sterling
Nigeria Potential Starting XI – Uzoho; Ebuehi, Balgon, Troost-Ekong, Idowu; Moses, Mikel, Onazi, Iwobi; Iheanacho, Ighalo
