Struggling Atalanta travel to Fiorentina on Sunday, in a game where both teams vitally need the three points.
Atalanta are winless in their last five games; their only win was a 4-0 triumph in the opening round over newcomers Frosinone. Last weekend, La Dea pegged back Milan at the death to draw 2-2 before being locked in a 0-0 midweek stalemate at home to Torino. The performances have been alarming for Atalanta, as many expected them to fight for a European spot this season. Although early, a loss here could see them fall further down the table and closer to a spot in the relegation zone.
Whereas, a win in Bergamo for Fiorentina could see the Viola move into the top 4. They have enjoyed a good start to the season and Marko Pjaca, Nikola Milenkovic and Federico Chiesa struck last weekend to give their side a 3-0 win over SPAL. They were downed 2-1 by Inter midweek, however, in a somewhat controversial clash. The VAR awarded Inter a penalty just before half time after what appeared to be an accidental Vitor Hugo handball. Chiesa equalised for his side, but Danilo D’Ambrosio won the game for Inter with his 77th minute strike. Three points in the upcoming fixture will do Stefano Pioli and his men wonders for their confidence as they look to solidify a European spot this season after a tragic finale to last season.
Fiorentina and Atalanta clean bills of health for the match, with Pioli and Gian Piero Gasperini having full squads to choose from for the match.
Potential Fiorentina Starting XI: Lafont, Milenkovic, Pezzella, Vitor Hugo, Biraghi, Benassi, Veretout, Gerson, Chiesa, Simeone, Pjaca
Potential Atalanta Starting XI: Gollini, Toloi, Djimsiti, Palomino, Castagne, De Roon, Freuler, Adnan, Pasalic, Zapata, Gomez
Stats & Facts
- Interestingly, the past four matches between these two sides have ended in draws, in seasons where Fiorentina and Atalanta were very evenly matched.
- Atalanta have not defeated Fiorentina since 2012 – a 13 game winless streak. The last win came in April 2012, where German Denis and Giacomo Bonaventura found the net.
- Fiorentina – 23/17
- Draw – 13/5
- Atalanta – 23/10
Atalanta have struggled against Fiorentina in the past, and I can’t see much changing here. An away trip to the Stadio Artemio Franchi is always difficult, and Fiorentina should be able to get the job done. Their attacking trident have been prolific so far this season as Atalanta have struggled in that department.
UniBet are offering 37/10 for Fiorentina to win with a -1 handicap, great odds considering their firepower up front.
