The opening round of the last 16 pits two heavyweights of the international game together with France taking on Argentina. It’s fair to say that neither team has hit top gear yet, in fact both have been underwhelming.
Looking through both sides’ attacking arsenal you’d expect them to be putting opposition to the sword, however that has failed to be the case with neither side overcoming the -1 handicap so far. For me, the clear problem with these two teams is the distinct lack of balance in their set-up, both are top heavy and it’s a struggle to fit all their attacking players into a well structured system.
Ever Banega came in for La Albiceleste in that Nigeria game and he was key to them progressing, his link up play with Messi was superb and his vision, calmness and quality on the ball is needed in this team.
Both sides have no fresh injury concerns but could alter their team selection.
Didier Deschamps is likely to revert back to the team that beat Australia and Peru as no one impressed from their much changed side in that dour encounter with Denmark.
Jorge Sampaoli seemingly has little or no influence on team selection anymore which is bizarre. Leo Messi seems to be calling the shots and I’d expect them to make few changes from their win against Nigeria.
Potential France Starting XI: Lloris, Pavard, Varane, Umtiti, Hernández, Kante, Pogba, Matuidi, Mbappe, Griezmann, Giroud.
Potential Argentina Starting XI: Armani, Mercado, Rojo, Otamendi, Tagliafico, Pérez, Mascherano, Banega, Di María, Higuain, Messi.
Head To Head
These two nations have met 4 times previously with Argentina winning every game, the most recent meeting was a 2-0 win for the South American side in 2009.
- France – 29/20
- Draw – 21/10
- Argentina – 13/5
It’s hard to trust both defences here, especially Argentina who conceded in each of their group games. France struggled to cope with Peru and were rarely tested by Denmark and Australia and they should be tested against Messi, Aguero, Higuain etc. To see the asian goal line set at 2 surprises me a little especially as it’s favouring the unders, to get odds against on that has to be taken especially with the insurance on side. This selection means if 3 or more goals are scored then we get a full payout, if exactly two goals are scored then our stakes are returned.
