France are overwhelming favourites in this one, and rightly so. They have a golden generation at their disposal and coach Didier Deschamps has an embarrassment of riches to choose from, especially in forward areas. Kylian Mbappe has forced Deschamps to alter his formation to get himself in, it looks like he will play a 4-3-3 with Mbappe and Griezmann either side of Giroud.
Australia only scraped through to the World Cup having to play an asian qualifier vs Syria and then a penultimate qualifier vs Honduras. They’re a team that will work hard and show spirit but ultimately lack quality. Ange Postecoglou unexpectedly left his post after qualification was secured and the federation moved to get Ex Saudi Arabia gaffer Burt van Marjiwk, it’s fair to say preparation hasn’t been brilliant.
France should have too much here but they need to get the balance in their team right in order to progress far into the competition. Kylian Mpabbe possesses lightning quick feet than can cause problems for the Aussies and I fancy him to get on the scoresheet here.
Samuel Umtiti and Djibril Sidibe are doubtful for Les Bleus.
The Socceroos have no new injury concerns.
Potential France Starting XI: Lloris, Pavard, Varane, Rami, Mendy, Pogba, Matuidi, Kante, Mbappe, Griezmann, Giroud.
Potential Australia Starting XI: Ryan, Degenek, Milligan, Sainsbury, Behich, Mooy, Jedinak, Luongo, Rogic, Cahill, Leckie.
Key Stats & Facts
- Australia have won 2/13 of their World Cup games.
- The last encounter between these ended 6-0 to France with Giroud bagging a brace.
- France – 3/10
- Draw – 13/2
- Australia – 11/1
France are too short in the betting, and even with a -1 handicap you can’t get evens so I’m swerving the outright market. I’m going to plump for Kylian Mbappe To Score anytime at 13/10, I’m also going to have a smaller punt on the 3-0 correct score line at 7/1.
