France, the hosts and runners-up in the 2016 European Championships face the USA in their final World Cup warm-up match. Didier Deschamps’ side are one of the favourites to lift the trophy in Russia (priced at 6/1 with insert Sky Bet) and are clear favourites to win Saturday night’s friendly against a US side that are continuing to experiment having failed to qualify for the World Cup.
The USA’s form has improved since Dave Sarachan took charge following Bruce Arena’s failure to win the all-important World Cup qualifier against Trinidad and Tobago back in December 2017. Since his step-up from assistant manager Sarachan overseen six matches, winning two, drawing two and losing two.
It’s worth noting the US lost to the Republic of Ireland 2-1 in Dublin last Friday night and haven’t beaten a team from Europe since 2015. However, The Yanks’ average squad age is an astonishing 22 and the young’uns have scored in four of their last five matches, most notably against European Champions Portugal in a 1-1 draw. Odds for The USA to score in Lyon can be found at 6/4 with Sky Bet.
The French have also recently played the Republic of Ireland, winning 2-0 just a week before the US lost. If there was ever an indicator to fill in for the lack of head-to-head matches between the two sides, this would be it. Both teams measuring themselves against the same opponent and coming away with completely different results, France winning, the US losing.
Les Bleus have won their last three fixtures, including a 3-1 win over Italy on the 1st June. Both teams scoring has been a safe bet with the French side of late as BTTS has landed in four of their last five fixtures. Griezmann and co have bagged 12 goals in their last five games but there’s been no indication of an out and out reliable goal scorer for Les Bleus as Giroud and Griezmann are top scorers in 2018 with four goals apiece.
As both sides will still be experimenting with their line up’s there’s no guarantee of how many minutes anyone will play, therefore it’s safer to stay away from the goalscorer market. The strength in depth of this French squad should see Les Bleus get the win regardless of who plays but don’t be surprised if the Americans grab a goal against a rotated defence.
Kenny Saief has withdrawn from the USA’s squad with an injury to his right leg which is yet to be determined. The 24-year-old will consequently miss out on the France game.
Potential France Starting XI: Lloris, Mendy, Umtiti, Kimpembe, Sidibe, N’Zonzi, Matuidi, Pogba, Lemar, Thauvin, Grioud.
Potential USA Starting XI: Hamid, Villafana, Miazga, Carter-Vickers, Yedlin, Trapp, McKennie, Adams, Weah, Rubin, Wood.
