The 97th version of the Derby della Lanterna takes place on Sunday evening as Genoa and Sampdoria face off in a match both sides desperately need to win.
Genoa are winless in their last six games; manager Ivan Juric is under heavy scrutiny on the Rossoblu bench as his side currently sit in 14th place on the table. A fortnight ago, they were downed 2-1 by Napoli after they gave up a 1-0 lead at home.
They have conceded nine goals in their last three games while only scoring twice, and Polish young gun Krzysztof Piatek has not scored since Juric has began as manager – he had scored nine times within the first seven games of the season but has failed to net since.
Meanwhile, Sampdoria are also struggling. After a bright start to the season, they now sit 12th and just one point ahead of Genoa. They have just two wins in their last nine games as pressure also mounts on Marco Giampaolo as Sampdoria manager. Before the international break, they succumbed to two 4-1 losses to Torino and Roma respectively and they have conceded 11 goals in their last three games.
This is sure to be a fiery match as usual, however both teams will be without a number of players.
Genoa will be without goalkeeper Federico Marchetti for the match and Sandro is in doubt for the derby.
Sampdoria, however, are missing the suspended Karol Linetty for the match while Vasco Regini and Edgar Barreto are missing.
Potential Genoa Starting XI: Radu, Biraschi, Romero, Criscito, Romulo, Hiljemark, Veloso, Bessa, Lazovic, Piatek, Kouame
Potential Sampdoria Starting XI: Audero, Bereszynski, Andersen, Tonelli, Murru, Praet, Jankto, Ekdal, Saponara, Quagliarella, Defrel
Key Stats & Facts
- Genoa have only won one of their last nine derbies against Sampdoria.
- In Serie A, Sampdoria have kept clean sheets in the last three games against their rivals.
- Genoa – 8/5
- Draw – 23/10
- Sampdoria – 7/4
As aforementioned, this will be a fiery match. However, I believe there should be plenty of goals in this one due to both sides defensive incapabilities.
I predict that the game will see over 2.5 goals, while I also think that Piatek will break his drought in this match.
