The most exciting aspect of a boxing tournament is the eventual match up of the best fighters within the tournament. When the World Boxing Super Series (WBSS) announced their Super Middleweight tournament, the 2 names that will have got UK fans talking the most would have been George Groves and Chris Eubank jr. After being matched up on the same side of the bracket, the 2 meet in the semi-final of the tournament, with Groves putting his WBA (super) Super Middleweight title on the line.
It took Groves 4 attempts to claim his first world title, when he stopped Fedor Chudinov back in May last year. In what was the last chance saloon for the Londoner, and he took out the Russian in the 6th round with a beautiful combination and solidified his status amongst the best fighters at 168lbs. A comfortable win against the over-matched Jamie Cox then followed in the first round of the WBSS, meaning Groves is on his way to cementing his number 1 spot in the division over Gilberto Ramirez.
For Eubank jr, this will be his first real opportunity to back up all the brash and brazen talk. There is absolutely no doubting Eubank jr’s talent; crisp hand speed and good footwork is now being mixed in with much improved head movement, meaning he is developing all the skills needed to transition from 160 to 168. But still, that name is missing off his record to really solidify himself amongst the best Middle and Super Middleweights in the world. If Eubank jr wins the whole tournament, it would be easy too see him moving back down to 160 where fights against Saunders, Canelo, and GGG are all viable, big money fight options, just as it would be if he choses to stay at 168.
The question here is will Eubank jr be able to deal with the jab of Groves, and if he does have success, will Groves be able to offset the rhythm of Eubank jr to make the fight scrappy. The speed advantage is clearly with the younger man, as is footwork and head movement, and Eubank jr will be looking to set the pace from the opening bell. If he can continually be in and out of the pocket attacking from angles, Groves could be chasing shadows all night.
For Groves, it’s about setting up his power shots behind his well-established jab, in order to break down the smaller man. It can’t be understated just how much KO power Groves has in one shot, and if he can draw Eubank jr in and begin to time him on the counter, he could end this fight early.
George Groves 11/8 Chris Eubank jr 8/13
- Eubank jr by decision 5/2
- Groves to win in round 7-9 10/1
