The Germans kick-off their World Cup defence against Mexico in the second Group F fixture. However, Joachim Loew’s side haven’t really been all that in the lead up to the World Cup winning just one of their six pre-tournament friendlies.
In that time, they’ve picked up draws against England, France and Spain, whilst losing to Austria and Brazil, but in all fairness, these friendlies must be taken with a pinch of salt and there’s no doubt Germany will turn on the style once the group stage begins.
In 2014, Germany topped a group consisting of Portugal, the United States and Ghana, picking up seven points in the process. Their opening match was an emphatic 4-0 win against Portugal and four years on I can see the same happening again, considering Germany have the firepower to leave out Premier League YPOTY, Leroy Sané.
Although it’s not just my ‘gut feeling’ that suggests Germany will win, they managed to take the full 30 points from their World Cup qualifying campaign, scoring a huge 43 goals in the process.
Mexico’s pre-World Cup form reads as WLDWL, facing Iceland, Croatia, Wales, Scotland and Denmark in that period. It appears Mexico have had their troubles finding the back of the net recently as they’ve only managed two goals in their last four fixtures, with under 2.5 commonly being apparent too.
Juan Carlos Osorio’s men have scored in 16 of their last in their 18 qualifying matches, averaging just under a goal a game. If they’re to get a result against Germany on Sunday, stats suggest they’d need to buck the trend and score two goals in one game.
No injury news.

Key Stats & Facts
- Chicarito is Mexico’s all-time leading scorer with 49 goals.
- Germany won 4-1 last time the sides met.
- Germany have reached the QF’s in the last nine World Cups, reaching the SF’s in the last four.
- Muller is the top active goal-scorer in the World Cup with 10 goals to his name.
- Germany 1/2
- Draw 10/3

Mexico most recently faced Germany in the 2017 Confederations Cup, losing 4-1 and if we were to go back even further to 2005 (the Confederations Cup) and 1998 (the World Cup), we’d find Germany won both matches with both teams scoring. Sky Bet give odds of 21/10 for history to repeat itself for a 4th time with a Germany BTTS win.
