Following Ronaldo’s departure this summer, Real Madrid will experience their first season without the Portuguese goal scorer for over ten years. Therefore, this presents the opportunity for a new star to step forward and be the key figure within a star-studded side.
However, Real Madrid’s 2018/19 campaign didn’t exactly go to plan, losing 4-2 in the opening fixture of the season to Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup. The current Champions League holders struggled to defeat their local rivals as a Diego Costa inspired performance guided Atletico to victory.
Despite this, the Galatico’s managed to secure a win on the first day of the La Liga season, seeing of Getafe 2-0. Gareth Bale grabbed the second goal in this fixture and was unfortunately unable to score Real Madrid’s opening goal of the La Liga season, which he managed to do for the past three seasons.
Girona, on the other hand, recorded an opening day draw against Real Valladolid. However, the Spanish side impressed during pre-season as they defeated Tottenham 4-1.
The only injuries that Real Madrid will face when entering this fixture is that of central defender, Jesus Vallejo, who is currently suffering from a muscular injury. On the other hand, Girona enter this meeting with a fully fit squad.
Potential Girona Starting XI: Bounou; Porro, Ramirez Lopez, Espinosa, Muniesa; Granell, Timor, Garcia; Portu, Stuani, Borja
Potential Real Madrid Starting XI: Courtois; Carvajal, Nacho, Ramos, Marcelo; Modric, Kroos, Isco; Bale, Benzema, Asensio
Head To Head
- Last season, these two sides had a mixed bag of results – with Real Madrid recording a 6-3 win in March while Girona overturned the Galatico’s 2-1 in October.
Key Stats & Facts
- Gareth Bale has managed to find the back of the net four times in eight games, with the Welshmen growing in confidence.
- Girona – 7/1
- Draw – 9/2
- Real Madrid – 1/3
Girona have demonstrated within pre-season and the early stages of this season that they possess a strong defensive unit, therefore, I believe if Real Madrid were to take the lead – it would be during the second half.
