On each of the five days of the festival, there is a Royal Procession at 14.00. At this point, the Queen is driven slowly down the straight mile in her horse drawn Royal Landau carriages. At the same time, the National Anthem is played aloud while the Royal Standard flag is raised. It was King George IV who started this tradition in 1825, and it has been adhered to ever since.

There are seven races on each of the first four days of Royal Ascot and seven more on Saturday’s final day of racing. In total, there are eight Group One listed races, including the Ascot Gold Cup, as well as a host of Group Twos and Threes as well, making up eighteen Group races in all. Around 500 of the world's finest racehorses will participate over the five days of what is Britain's most valuable race meeting, which is broadcast to audiences all around the world.

Race Structure for the Ascot Gold Cup

The Ascot Gold Cup is a Group One race for four-year-olds and older, and undoubtedly the highlight of the Royal Ascot Festival. Held on the Thursday, also known as Ladies Day, it is raced underweight for age conditions over two miles, three furlongs and 210 yards. However, it isn’t the longest race of Royal Ascot week – that honour belongs to the Queen Alexandra Stakes, the final race of the festival. (In 2020, the meeting was held behind closed doors due to the pandemic).

Known to provide a thorough test of a horse's stamina, the Gold Cup is part of the Stayers' Triple Crown, which also includes the Goodwood Cup and the Doncaster Cup. The last horse to win all three races in the same year was Double Trigger in 1995.

The very best in flat horse racing will converge on Berkshire for the 2022 Royal Ascot, beginning on Tuesday 14th June all the way through to the climax of the event on Saturday 18th June.

Only 12,000 spectators were permitted per day at the festival in 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but there will be a return to normality in the Royal Stand and the enclosures at the event in 2022 to create a lively atmosphere for the competitors and racegoers.

The quality of the action matches those seen at Cheltenham Festival and the Grand National for sheer entertainment. Races such as the Queen Anne Stakes whet the appetite on day one before the Prince of Wales’ Stakes, Ascot Gold Cup, Commonwealth Cup and Coronation Stakes take centre-stage.

Royal Ascot Predictions and Tips

  • List Icon

The Queen Anne Stakes is the first major race of Royal Ascot, and demands the attention of all punters and spectators alike. The early favourite in the ante-post betting odds is Baaeed, who won all six of his races last season, including a memorable triumph over Palace Pier on the line in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot in October. While it will take something special to beat William Haggas′ charge. Mother Earth′s development under Aidan O′Brien could be worth monitoring, especially if he can compete with Baaeed at the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury. Masters of the Seas is also a worth contender for the crown, even though he was well off the pace of Baaeed in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. Having said all this, all signs point to Baaeed in the contest, although it will be worth monitoring his form ahead of the race.

  • List Icon

Golden Pal is the horse to watch in the King Stand Stakes, having ended the campaign back on home soil in America where he won the Woodford Stakes and Breeders′ Cup Turf Sprint. His only poor performance was in England in the Nunthorpe Stakes, finishing seventh at York, but there will be hope from his owners for a dramatic improvement. Australian thoroughbreds Nature Strip and Home Affairs could challenge the American in the contest, given their strong form Down Under. Winter Power has an intriguing price at 14/1, having beaten Golden Pal at York last season. A Case For You should also be in the mix after claiming victory in the Prix de l′Abbaye at Longchamp. All in all, it appears to be a wide-open race.

  • List Icon

The Ascot Gold Cup is the most significant prize of the week, with the 2021 iteration of the race having thrown up a surprise as Stradivarius′ reign as champion was ended. John Gosden′s charge had won three-straight crowns and was aiming to match Yeats′ run for four victories in a row. However, he was off the pace and could only watch as Subjectivist won the race. Unfortunately for Mark Johnston, however, Subjectivist has been ruled out of the 2022 campaign, giving hope to the rest of the field.

  • List Icon

Stradivarius is poised for one last ride, and has odds of 8/1, which may be out of sentiment rather than his actual form. He was beaten by Trueshan in the Qatar Prix du Cadran and the British Champions Long Distance Cup, who seems to be the consensus pick for the Gold Cup. Meanwhile, Dubai World Cup winner Stay Foolish could provide a test, along with Nad Al Sheba Trophy winner Manobo, who has William Buick and Charlie Appleby as his jockey and trainer respectively. This is set to be the race of the week.

  • List Icon

Perfect Power is the horse to pay attention to for the Coronation Stakes, according to Royal Ascot betting odds. The Irish thoroughbred won the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot last season, and finished the campaign with successive triumphs in the Darley Prix Morny and Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes. He has a price of 10/1 in the antepost, which is definitely worth considering, especially should he maintain his form to start the 2022 campaign. Finally, Native Trail is another one to monitor out of Appleby′s yard, at a good price of 14/1.

Frankie Dettori, Ryan Moore, Jim Crowley, Oisin Murphy and Hollie Doyle are among the top jockeys, while Aidan O’Brien, Sir Michael Stoute, John Gosden, Charlie Appleby and William Haggas are the trainers aiming to etch their name in the history of the festival.

  3. 3.

UK Tradition: Royal Ascot has been a cornerstone of British sport since the festival began in 1768. Almost everyone in the United Kingdom has an awareness of the event and its importance to horse racing in the country. People will flock to Berkshire from around the UK and beyond to watch and bet on the action as well as enjoy the other festivities while being dressed to the nines. Even the Queen enjoys the spectacle and competitive atmosphere, making regular appearances at the festival to watch her horse compete, along with other members of the British Royal Family.

Ascot Gold Cup: Few races in the world have the prestige and history of the Ascot Gold Cup, which is arguably the most coveted prize of the festival and the flat racing season. The race has witnessed truly great feats by both horses and jockeys, winning the crown with sheer brilliance. The Ascot Gold Cup never disappoints for entertainment, and the 2022 iteration promises to be a thriller.

While there are many great races at Royal Ascot for betting on horses, the majority of the hype always surrounds Gold Cup betting.

Dating back to 1807, the Gold Cup is the festival's main event, and is one of the most famous races in the world. It takes place on the third day, which is always a Thursday, and is raced on the famous Ascot turf over a distance of two miles, three furlongs and 210 yards.

Overall, though, the festival itself is an event for the best stayers in the world of horse racing, and one very much anticipated by all bettors. As such, Ascot Gold Cup betting is always a thrilling market with plenty of options, the most popular of which we have listed below.

Outright Winner

With an outright bet, you are required to bet on the winning horse – as in, the horse that you believe will finish first in a nominated race, such as the Royal Ascot Gold Cup. There is nothing confusing or concerning about this wager. All you need to do is simply add your pick, or picks, to your bet slip. Then, add the amount that you wish to wager before placing the bet, which will only pay out if your horse wins.

Best Royal Ascot betting site for outrights: Paddy Power

Each-Way Betting

One way of shoring up your bet is to make an each-way wager. Again, using the Ascot Gold Cup as an example, you simply make your selection for the big race, choose two equal stakes – one for the win and one for the place – and place your bet with your chosen online bookmaker. In a nutshell, an each-way bet is two bets in one. Both parts of the bet will pay out if your selection wins the Royal Ascot Gold Cup; however, if your horse finishes in the top few places that a bookie has agreed to pay out for, you’ll get paid on the place part of the bet instead.

Best Royal Ascot betting site for each-way wagers: bet365

Forecast Betting

Forecast bets work by picking two horses and nominating them to finish first and second in a horse race – in this case, the Ascot Gold Cup. As long as both of your horses finish in the order that you predicted, then the bet has been proved successful and you will receive a payout.

Best Royal Ascot betting site for forecasts: Ladbrokes

Tricast Bet

As you may have worked out from the name, tricast bets are almost the same as forecasts; the difference here being that you need to work out and correctly predict the first THREE horses to come home in a race. Once again, the order of the three horses is very important – you cannot just nominate the three horses to finish in the first three in any order, unless you pay for it with an anyway tricast. That particular combination bet requires six stakes – one for each outcome. Sticking with a straight tricast, assuming you correctly guessed the three horses in the right order, you returns are paid to the pound.

Best Royal Ascot betting site for tricasts: bet365

Accumulator Bet

Accumulator (‘acca') bets are extremely prevalent at a festival such as Royal Ascot. Given the amount of races that occur over the course of the five days of the event, there is a great chance to compile selections together to secure a significant profit, with several options for accas on horse racing. These can include simple doubles or trebles. For the more savvy horse racing bettor, there are options such as Lucky 15, Heinz and Yankees, among others.

Best Royal Ascot betting site for accumulators: Paddy Power

Live Betting

The best online bookmakers for Royal Ascot will have in-play betting available as the races happen, during which prices will fluctuate to match the tone of the contest. If the favourite has had a slow start and you time your bet to perfection, you may end up with a good profit if it manages to pull out the win. If you follow racing and are able to watch events as they unfold, this could be the Royal Ascot bet for you.

The course at Ascot dates back to 1711, when Queen Anne was staying at nearby Windsor Castle and, while out on a ride, happened upon an open heath that she believed would be the perfect space for her horses to gallop around. She duly purchased the area for a fee of just £558, and it was swiftly made suitable for horses to race. When Queen Anne died and King George I was crowned, Ascot was ignored due to the new monarch’s loathing of all things sports-related. By 1720, racing had resumed where both it and the race course thrived, as Ascot developed into one of Britain’s most famous racecourses.

While the first-ever Ascot race meeting was held in August 1711, the first four-day race meeting held at the course wasn’t until 1768. At this point, the meeting wasn’t carrying a royal prefix, but it did begin to gain significance when the Gold Cup was added to the schedule in 1807. By 1911, the festival had officially been declared to be a Royal event. It was King George IV who introduced tradition of the daily royal carriage procession in 1825, which has continued ever since.

Queen Anne’s role in the development of the track – and the festival it later inspired – is honoured by Royal Ascot's premier public enclosure, The Queen Anne Enclosure. The festival’s opening race, The Queen Anne Stakes, also takes its name from the former monarch.

As for the festival’s biggest race, the Ascot Gold Cup was first run in 1807, and was at the time open only to horses three or older. Master Jackey became the inaugural winner, a triumph that was witnessed by King George III and Queen Charlotte. This Group One race has seen many horses win on multiple occasions, but no horse has won it more than Irish superstar Yeats, who banked his fourth win in 2009. In fact, a statue of the great horse is today situated in the parade ring as a tribute to his magnificent achievement. In 2013, the Queen became the first reigning monarch to win the race with her horse, Estimate.
