Wednesday evening sees the final games of Group D take place and Croatia and Iceland lock horns again after meeting each other in qualifying for this years’ World Cup.
Croatia have been one of, if not the stand out team in the tournament so far, they have yet to concede a goal and put Argentina to the sword with an impressive display running out comfortable 3-0 winners.
Iceland have played the way many expected in this tournament, working hard without the ball and looking to counter. Their game plan worked well against the afore mentioned Argentinians, however they froze when posed with the task of capitalising on that good start with Gylfi Sigurdsson blazing over their best chance of the match from the penalty spot.
This is a tough game to call with Croatia looking likely to rest key players as they’re already guaranteed a place in the last 16 and Iceland are fighting to reach the same stage of the competition.
Alfred Finbogason has 3 goals in his last 4 international appearances and he’ll leading the line again on Tuesday looking to add to his goal tally at this years’ tournament. The need for Iceland to win should provide a game with plenty of chances, but Croatia will still have plenty of quality on the pitch with Luka Modric looking to carry on his impressive form in the tournament. He can be backed to score in the match at 4/1 with Bet365.
Hopefully a game with chances gives us a game with goals. Croatia to win and both teams to score could be the way to go, it’s best priced 17/4 with BetStars.
Iceland centre-back Ragnar Sigurdsson is a doubt for the game after being forced off against Nigeria with a head injury. Winger Johann Berg Gudmundsson missed that defeat with a muscle problem, and will also be assessed.
Croatia boss Zlatko Dalic may opt to make numerous changes, with his already assured of their place in the last 16.Forward Andrej Kramaric dropped out of the starting line-up against Argentina and could earn a recall. Ivan Rakitic, Ante Rabic, Sime Vrsaljko, Mario Mandzukic, Marcelo Brozovic and Vedran Corluka are all one booking away from a ban, and are therefore unlikely to play.
Potential Iceland Starting XI: Hannes Halldorsson; Birkir Saevarsson, Kari Arnason, Ragnar Sigurdson, Hordur Magnusson; Aron Gunnarsson, Emil Hallfredsson, Johann Gudmundsson, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Birkir Bjarnason; Alfred Finnbogason
Potential Croatia Starting XI: Lovre Kalinic; Tin Jedvaj, Vedran Corluka, Domagoj Vida, Josip Pivaric; Milan Badelj, Mateo Kovacic, Luka Modric; Marko Pjaca, Andrej Kramaric, Ivan Perisic
Head To Head
- Iceland have only won one of their six previous games against Croatia (D1, L4), with all of those meetings coming in World Cup qualifying.
- But Iceland finished above Croatia in qualifying for this tournament. They beat the Croats 1-0 in Reykjavik in June 2017, avenging a 2-0 loss in Zagreb in November 2016.
Key Stats & Facts
- This will be the 7th different meeting between the two teams but the first in a major tournament, with all of their previous encounters coming in World Cup qualifiers.
- Croatia have won 2 consecutive World Cup games for the first time since 1998, they have never won 3 in a row.
- There have been 3 red cards awarded in the last four head-to-head games.
- Iceland 41/10
- Draw 33/13
- Croatia 6/5
Right then, it’s last chance saloon for Iceland in this group and hopefully they take a chance and attack Croatia who as mentioned are likely to ring the changes. Even with these changes though I fancy Croatia to come out on top in a hard fought game.
