These two fierce rivals meet in the historic derby D’Italia on Saturday night, and there’s so much at stake. As two of the biggest cities in Northern Italy this meeting is somewhat of a geographical rivalry but it is also deeper rooted as a political one too as the respective regions of Lombardy (Milan) and Pied-Mont (Turin) have very differing outlooks historically in the political spectrum. This derby has intensified since the 1997-98 season where Inter were contentiously not given a penalty for a foul on Ronaldo and that allowed Juventus to eventually become league champions over Inter after a 1-0 win. That game even led to a parliamentary debate which turned into a war of words between opposing politicians, eventually the debate had to be suspended and several politicians were penalised for their actions. The passion is real.
This time around one team is gunning for the championship whereas the other is desperate to reach a champions league qualification place. Juve were involved in a humongous game at the weekend against title rivals Napoli, the Bianconeri were dominated for the most part by a fluid Partenopei who eventually got the breakthrough in the 89th minute courtesy of a bullet header from centre half Kalidou Koulibaly, it was nothing more than they deserved. That loss to the Naples based club has made this title race one of the most epic in Europe, leaving Juve only one point ahead of Napoli with 4 games remaining. ‘The Old Lady’ failed to show any authority in that clash, just like they did at home to Real Madrid in the Champions League, Max Allegri and his safety first approach has not benefited them in the big games. They have a side brimming with quality but failed to go toe-to-toe with a more attacking counterpart. Having said that, it is clear they set up for a point to keep Napoli at arms length, but by implementing that game plan you always leave yourself vulnerable to a late goal when the overwhelming pressure proves too much.
Inter, on the other hand, have had an up and down season under Luciano Spalletti. Early on they were up there setting the pace but their form dipped in the winter and that coincided with the goals drying up for striker Mauro Icardi. Icardi has returned to some goalscoring form though of late and that is a big plus for the hosts here. The Nerazzuri are in a three way battle for the two remaining champions league spots however they currently sit in 5th place a point behind both capital clubs Roma and Lazio. This game has pressure for both sides and it promises to be a tight and trappy affair and that’s where I’m heading with the betting.
Under 2.5 goals has been chalked up at 7/10 with MarathonBet and that looks solid. I’m also going to throw in the 0-0 Half time correct score which is available at 13/8 at William Hill, Inter won’t come out at Juve like Napoli did, they prefer more of a counter attacking game so I’m expecting a lot of the ball to be in midfield with few clear cut chances. A goalless first half has landed in 3 of Inter’s last 5 and it also landed in that Juve vs Napoli game. In addition, with so much at stake and the rivalry between these two I’m expecting bookings, over 45 booking points is available at 3/4 with William Hill, I expected that line to be a bit higher so I’m happy to take that too in a game that could get feisty.
Matías Vecino is still a doubt for the home side while Roberto Gagliardini is sidelined.
Mattia De Sciglio, Giorgio Chiellini, Stefano Sturaro and Claudio Marchisio are all sidelined for the away side.
