Senegal need just a point to guarantee progression to the Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16 but they’ll be gunning to bounce back from their slender Matchday 2 defeat with a statement victory over Kenya.

Aliou Cissé’s outfit were beaten 1-0 by Algeria in Cairo on Thursday evening, leaving them level on three points with the Harambee Stars heading into their final group game.

Cissé probably has Africa’s best squad at his disposal, certainly on a player-by-player basis; Senegal not only have a strong starting eleven but they also possess strength in-depth on the bench. If the Kenyans give this quality-laden side any space in the final third, expect the firepower of Keita Baldé, M’Baye Niang, Ismaïla Sarr, and Sadio Mané to capitalise.

Kenya manager Sebastien Migne has described this game as somewhat of a free-hit, after his side secured a 3-2 come-from-behind victory versus Eastern Africa neighbours Tanzania in their second group game. This crucial win means that Migne’s side can still qualify for the knockout stages, with a point against Senegal likely to see them progress as one the best third-placed teams.

Team News

Victor Wanyama will captain Kenya.

After starting on the bench in the loss to Algeria, Idrissa Gueye could come back into Senegal’s midfield.

Potential Kenya Starting XI: Matasi, Owino, Khamis, Mohammed, Okumu, Kahata, Otieno, Wanyama, Omolo, Masika, Olunga.

Potential Senegal Starting XI: Mendy, Wagué, Kouyaté,  Koulibaly, Sabaly, Keita Baldé, Gueye, N’Diaye, Diatta, Mané, Niang.

Head To Head

  • These sides last met in a friendly over seven years ago, with Senegal running out 1-0 winners. The Lions of Teranga have never lost against Kenya, recording two 3-0 victories and a goalless draw in their other three head-to-head fixtures.

Key Stats & Facts

  • Senegal had won seven on the bounce before losing to Algeria. Six of these came to nil.
  • The Lions of Teranga are the highest-ranked nation in the tournament. Kenya rank 105th.
  • Kenya have lost the xG count in both of their games.

Betting Odds

  • Kenya – 7/1
  • Draw – 13/5
  • Senegal – 27/50

The Verdict

I’m keen to support Unibet’s 17/20 on Senegal with a -0.75 Asian Handicap hurdle here. This market has already been backed in to around 7/10 elsewhere; it’s a standout price that I believe represents good value.

We’ll profit from this selection with a half stakes win should Senegal secure victory by a single goal. Any bigger margin of success and we’ll be rewarded with a full winner.

Under Aliou Cissé, the Lions of Teranga have recorded eight competitive away wins and three draws against nations who rank outside FIFA’s top 100. At their current quotes, there’s merit in backing them to secure another success against inferior opposition on Monday.
