Due to Harry Kane’s last-minute goal vs Slovenia at Wembley on Thursday evening, England have now officially qualified for next summer’s World Cup in Russia with one game to spare.
England failed to impress in front of a sparsely populated crowd at Wembley and the game seemed destined to finish 0-0 before Kane popped up with yet another goal to secure England’s place at the Finals.
Gareth Southgate’s side have found this qualifying campaign quite demanding at times but ultimately, they have achieved what they were expected to do; qualify for the World Cup top of the group. Objective completed.
What does that mean for this game? Well England will be able to play with no pressure or stress and should be confident of letting loose and giving Lithuania a harsh lesson. Fans will be hoping to see goals and run-outs for those who haven’t had much game time this campaign.
Southgate will no doubt make changes in a game which, ultimately, means nothing to either side. Lithuania are second bottom of the group and were never likely to get close to the play-off positions. They do not really stand any chance of getting even a point here against an England side which should be able to hit them for six or seven.
Lithuania have never beaten England in the three games they have played against each other and neither have they ever scored a goal against the Three Lions. Everything points towards an England win to nil and you can find that at 31/25 with MarathonBet.
Dele Ali served his one-match ban vs Slovenia so will be available to Southgate.
As this game is pretty much a friendly, Southgate will make plenty of changes and give players on the fringe of the squad some minutes. Jermain Defoe could start the game and the likes of Harry Winks, Jake Livermore, Jack Butland, Aaron Creswell and Nathaniel Chalobah could play a part.
However, England will want to end on a positive note so Southgate could go strong and seek a big win.
Potential Lithuania Starting XI: Setkus; Vaitkunas, Mikuckis, Girdvainis, Andriuskevicius; Kuklys, Matulevicius; Cernych, Slivka, Novikovas; Valskis
Potential England Starting XI: Butland; Keane, Smalling, Maguire; Trippier, Winks, Livermore, Cresswell; Lingard, Ali; Sturridge
