It wasn’t too long ago that everyone had Luton down as nailed-on champions of league 2, however in the last month or two their form and results have dipped. The Hatters have not been aided by a wonderfully persistent Accrington Stanley side who have now overtaken them at the top of the table.
Nathan Jones has seen his side fail to win in their last five, four have admittedly been draws but against teams you’d expect them to beat in the shape of Cheltenham, Cambridge and Newport. The Bedfordshire-based outfit should still have enough to secure promotion and they will be going into this televised clash wanting to perform to their optimum potential. Reasoning behind their drop off could be down to a psychological belief that they’d already done what they had to leading to a lack of concentration. Jones recently said after their defeat at home to Accrington that it is the kick up the backside they needed to get going again.
Graham Westley was dismissed by the Barnet hierarchy last week after a failure to get the wins needed to drag them out of the drop zone. It was inevitable that chairman Anthony Kleanhous would call upon club stalwart Martin Allen to save the sinking ship. For what feels like the 100th time, Allen has been drafted in to perform a firefighting job and galvanise a squad that has struggled all season. Their defensive deficiencies have been clear to see all season as has their lightweight central midfield, however they have scored in most their matches, even without John Akinde for the most part.
Seeing 2nd at home against 24th at odds as big as 4/7 may surprise a few, if this game was taking place 3 months ago Luton would’ve been 1/3 shots at best in my book. Every game is becoming a must win for Barnet now though considering their 7 point gap to 22nd placed Grimsby so I’d expect them to come out at some point but the difference in quality between the two squads is huge and Luton should run out victorious.
Midfielders Lawson D’ath and Alan McCormack could be doubts for the hosts.
Harry Taylor, Elliot Johnson and striker Dave Tarpey are doubtful for the visitors.
