Manchester City host Atalanta on Tuesday night looking to make it 3 wins out of 3 in this year’s Group Stage of the Champions League. City have looked comfortable in this seasons competition and they’ll be confident of another win against an Atalanta side who have underperformed so far.
The visitors have been beaten 4-0 and 2-1 in their first 2 games and it would be a big upset if they are to get a result in this game. In Serie A they have done well on the road and they have picked up big results against Roma and Lazio. Looking at their domestic record it is surprising that they haven’t managed to perform better in these two group games.
City are on another level compared to most teams and they bounced back to winning ways against Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday night. In that game they had most of the play and were rarely troubled despite having no recognised Centre Back on the pitch. I think City will look to play Stones in this match knowing that the visitors are very capable of posing problems in attack.
Fernandinho and Rodri were forced to play central defence against Palace due to City's issues at the back, but John Stones made his recovery from injury off the bench at Selhurst Park.
The England international could now start on Tuesday night, while fellow centre-back Nicolas Otamendi is likely to be declared fit as the knock that ruled him out of Saturday's affair is not serious.
Leroy Sane and Aymeric Laporte remain long-term absentees with knee injuries, but Kyle Walker has an outside chance of featuring as the Englishman looks to overcome a recent illness.
As for Atalanta, leading scorer Duvan Zapata has been in red-hot form this season, but the Colombia international is a doubt with a thigh injury that he picked up over the international break.
If Zapata is not available to feature then Luis Muriel, who scored twice in Saturday's 3-3 draw with Lazio in Serie A, is expected to start at the tip of the attack.
Marten de Roon is pushing for a recall having been named among the substitutes at the weekend, although the former Middlesbrough midfielder might have to once again accept a spot on the bench.
Potential Manchester City Starting XI: Ederson; Cancelo, Otamendi, Stones, Mendy; De Bruyne, Rodri, Gundogan; Bernardo, Aguero, Sterling
Potential Atalanta Starting XI: Gollini; Toloi, Palomino, Masiello; Hateboer, Freuler, Pasalic, Gosens; Malinovskiy, Muriel, Gomez
Key Stats & Facts
- Luis Muriel has 5 goals in 272 minutes of football this season.
- Manchester City have scored 3.2 goals on average across five competitive home matches this season.
- Atalanta’s last four games have seen both teams score and at least 3 goals.
- Atalanta have picked up 13 yellow cards in their 2 Champions League games this season.
- Man City 1/5
- Draw 6/1
- Atalanta 12/1
Manchester City are big favourites to win this match and I think given Atalanta’s recent Champions League performance that’s very fair. City looked to be back in form on Saturday night and I’d fancy that they would be able to score a few goals past what looks like a porous Atalanta defence. The visitors have conceded 6 goals in 4 games and they’re up against a City side capable of scoring plenty in one game when they get on top. I actually think that if City are able to call upon a recognised Centre Back then they could be capable of keeping a clean sheet given that they’ll have most of the ball. City to win to nil is 6/4 (BetVictor) and I think that could be a good angle given Atalanta’s struggles in their previous away game in this competition.
Kevin De Bruyne has been in good form this season and has managed to get himself on the scoresheet twice and with the front 3 of Manchester City being very short in value I think De Bruyne has a good chance to get himself on the scoresheet. He is a tremendous midfielder and takes plenty of shots and finds himself in advanced positions as well which should help our cause. De Bruyne is 9/4 (Unibet) to score at anytime in the match.
