Bristol City remarkably and deservedly got through a tricky looking encounter at home to Manchester United in the quarter final. José Mourinho commented after that game saying that his opponents were ‘lucky’, another nonsense claim from him. Looking at the stats in that game it was pretty level and the West Country boys do carry a threat going forward. Joe Bryan scored a fantastic goal in that clash which included silky build up play and a devastating finish.

Unfortunately for Lee Johnson, his team have drawn the favourites for the competition in Manchester City. However, the gaffer has rested and rotated his main players at the weekend against Watford so they will be fresh coming into this one. Bobby Reid, Jamie Paterson, Joe Bryan, Bailey Wright, Nathan Baker and Marlon Pack should all return here to give the Robins the best chance to come away with a decent result.

Manchester City come into this one on the back of a strong second half performance to get the better of Burnley on Saturday. They have struggled in this competition albeit scraping through against Leicester and Wolves with both games ending all square after 90 minutes. Team news is key here, with a trip to Liverpool on the horizon Pep will have to think carefully on how he goes about this. Danilo, Zinchenko, Diaz, Adirabayo and Bernado Silva could all start but it’s hard to know at time of writing. If Sergio Aguero is rested here then Man City are without a recognised number 9 given the long term absence of Gabriel Jesus.

Team News

John Stones could well feature on his return from a recent injury, Ben Mendy and Phil Foden are still long term absentees along with the aforementioned Jesus.

Korey Smith should be fit to start for Bristol City.

Potential Man City starting XI: Bravo, Danilo, Stones, Mangala, Zinchenko, Yaya Toure, Gundogan, Bernardo Silva, Sterling, Sane, Aguero.

Potential Bristol City starting XI: Fielding, Magnusson, Wright, Flint, Baker, Bryan, Pack, Brownhill, Smith, Paterson, Reid.

Overview

It’s hard to look past Man City to win against pretty much anyone at home at the moment but they’ve made hard work of it in this competition. In addition, there is a caveat of this being a 2 legged tie which has to be thought about when betting. 1/7 is the best price about the hosts to win this but you’d have to back them on a -3 handicap to get an odds-against quote about them, I feel this Bristol City side will be well prepared and could keep this game relatively tight going into the 2nd leg at Ashton Gate.

We can back the Robins on a +2.5 line on the Asian Handicap at a smidgen under even money and that looks fair enough. Even if Man City win this one by exactly 2 goals then this bet would land. I feel a Man City win by exactly 2 goals wouldn’t be the worst result for both teams, all things considered.
